I don't think that the argument "get rid of drivethroughs to prevent inconvenience" is going to work logically. People use them because they are convenient.

Parking lots are a poor solution as well; they take lots of land and lead to more cars and more roads as land use become less efficient.

Putting in transit hubs with shopping near light-rail stations could work pretty well though.

Well:

a) it's happening now. It looks like 10% of all the cars on the road out here (San Diego) are hybrids now.
b) big vehicles can be hybrids as well; look at the Toyota Highlander.
