Presuming, of course, that the whole thing wasn't invented to begin with. Anyone who had seen a crucifiction could have convincingly written of one about any person, fictional or not, that he or she wanted to. A story written down decades later about an occurance isn't proof that the occurance really happened that way.

The earliest written record of the crucifiction was in Mark, and there is no mention of the stab in that book. Nor did Matthew or Luke mention the stabbing. Not until John was written, the latest of the four canonical Gospels (and the most questionable since it contradicts the other three on many important points), was the spear thrust added - My Bible, in the Concordance section, theorizes that the spear thrust was added to quell accusations that Jesus hadn't died that were already circulating by that time, possibly seventy years after the occurance in question.

Three out of four Gospels agree, there was no spear thrust.
