Back to the specific subject at hand -

This author is assuming that Roman Centurions did not know their business (doubtful - they were good at it - they did an awful lot of crucifying)

The author bases a lot on the blood flowing from Christ when stabbed in the side. It is mentioned as water and blood in the gospels - which is consistent with water on the lungs which is how most crucifixion victims died - they were not able to breathe properly and their lungs filled with fluid. Christ could have had his lung punctured and the fluid poured out as he died. This makes the possibility of a "swoon" even less probable.
