Subject: What I think...
In reply to: Adilbrand 's message, "State of the Union" on 23:33:19 01/29/03 Wed

I think it is one of the most dangerous and flawed ideas that the United States has ever put forth. There is no question that Hussein is a ruthless and terrible leader. There is no question, either, that if he gains control of nuclear weapons and is able to seize control of major oil fields that the world will be put into a serious bind. I think we forget just how important oil is to our survival as a modern nation. Yet, to push forth war-minded agenda is never a hopeful policy. Bush seems to be thinking only of how he can start a war, not how to avoid one. And I believe that avoiding war is generally preferrable to starting them.

Regardless of the loss of life and horror of war, the world will be given yet another instance in which the Americans bully other nations. Countries who don't like us now will be given even more incentive to blow us off the face of the map. And let's face it, if guys armed with picnic utensils can hi-jack planes and destroy thousands of the "enemy", then can we say with good faith that this is a wise course of action? Should we not be looking at ways to promote our image as peace-makers and benefactors to the lesser nations?

I know that Hussein has repeatedly engaged in gross crimes against humanity, but I am not sure that anyone in the world is really asking us to be the police of all humanity. And let us not forget that Bush's agenda really has nothing to do with humanity. He is a business man, a puppet for like business men, in a world run by business men. Whose interests are most at stake? Yours? Mine? To a degree. Disrupting the oil trade would seriously hamper our lives, but I fear that it is not the common man he is worried about. He is worried about the bottom dollar. In a Capitalist society, a society whose Presidents are elected by the cash vote, I find it difficult to think otherwise.

I am not a peace monger. Yet, I think good rulers should think of peace first and war second. I believe that Bush's agenda speaks volumes to the contrary, and for this I must stand against him. I think in the end it will cause much more harm than it will good...
