The thing is, without Arod and Jeter and Giambi and the other big money contracts to drive up the market, david eckstein won't land a 3 mil a year contract. The big money contracts allow other guys to say things like "Hey, Arod makes 25 million and I am half as good as he is, so I want 12.5 mil" in arbitration. The idea that they are striking to protect Arod isn't right. What they are doing is protecting Arod's earning power, so he can establish the market for shortstops. That is why the players do not want a cap. And if they had something that would make the Yankees and Rangers and Dodgers and Red Sox not want to pay players top dollar, it would trickle down and pretty soon the Pirates are telling Giles "Hey, the Yankees can't offer you anymore than 6 mil, so you might as well take our 8 mil"
