The soft, half pained sounds that escaped her lips in those long moments had his heart twisting in his chest. It was like that shriveled, broken piece of his heart had given a great, painful shudder and was now attempting to beat again. This had to be what a heart attack felt like, the pain was so great that he had to fight to keep his emotions from spilling over. And, honestly, had she not been right there in front of him, needing his help, he might well have let those emotions show for the first time in many years. Instead, he set a hand on her knee at her protest, fearful of breaking her now that he knew just how bad a shape she was in "Stay in the truck, Kat. Please" He was sure that if she decided to try and get out she would simply fall on her face and do herself even more damage. It wasn't a short fall from that spot, and in her condition, she was likely to smack her head on the curb.

But it seemed that she was going to cooperate after all, for now. So he closed her door, grabbed her bags, opened the rear door and stuffed them in the back seat. At this point it didn't matter what she had in there, he needed to get her someplace safe and see if she needed a doctor or not. Now that he knew who this battered creature was, he didn't rightly care if she didn't want to go to the hospital, if she needed it, he would carry her there through her arguments.

Skirting around the hood, he climbed up into the drivers seat and was just about to turn the engine over when her words reached him. They gave him pause though, and that part of his heart that was trying to recover gave a pathetic shudder and stopped once again. "Do you still think so poorly of me, after all these years, that you think I would leave anyone in your position out here to fend for themselves?" That hurt, that she still felt like that about him. He had always hoped that she would remember the good times rather than the bad. But it didn't seem that was true by her words.

He bit back the pain that threatened to rip the hole in his chest anew. Turning the engine over with a bit more force than the poor thing needed, he eased it into gear and pulled away from the curb. His truck was all he had really, she was as close to a relationship as he had with anything. He didn't even have a pet. He'd been too scared, deep down, to dare to form a real bond with anything. Because it could all be ripped away from you in the blink of an eye. He didn't dare look over at her, knowing his emotions were running too high, knowing they would show through those crystal blue eyes. Though he kept her in his peripheral, to be sure she wasn't passing out, or trying to jump out of the truck. He really didn't know her anymore, -How could you know anyone after ten years apart?- but he remembered her habits, and those often didn't change much.
