Whew... That's a bit long. But I really didn't spend that much on it (a lot of the parts I acquired off eBay)... This thing rocks, even with the Megatech .16 in it. I took second-place T-maxx this weekend (they ran the T-maxx and 1/10 scale trucks in the same race, along with a couple of MT's!!!). I tell you guys, I also race my 1/8 buggy, and my 1/10 scale Nitro cars, but it is hard to have as much fun as I do with my T-Maxx!!!

MUGEN MRX-3 1/8 Scale Race Car.... -- Erwin8r in Los Angeles, 10:02:43 05/24/02 Fri
Guys, I went out and picked-up a new 1/8 scale race car. This thing is wicked-fast!!! It is a Mugen MRX-3, with an L. Collari hand-modified .21 engine, Hitec Digital Servos, Huge foam tires, RB one-pice tuned pipe, and a whole load of attitude. It rocks!! Here's a picture:
I'm racing it this Saturday at SVM Raceway in Burbank--it is a nice, world-class facility that looks like a miniature Laguna Seca. I'll post more info and pic's soon....

Finally got my clod running yesterday...only to break 3 of the 4 shocks (actually only the rod ends broke, easy fix for now)but ended up ordering the associated blue tmaxx shocks. Hopefully 8 nice ones will hold up better than 4 shitty ones. anyhow, what the hell happened to the blue board??? WTF!!! some dumbass gets his kicks out of wasting his own time to get others angry at him??? what a putz. erwin, maybe you could make this the NEW board since you probably only get about one post per week if your lucky. not trying to crack on your board just thinking out loud.

- The Team Associated TC-3 is a great car. It is considered the car to beat nationally, and is gaining ground internationally. It features superb handling and excellent adjustability. Associatted is, of course, very well know for quality electirc touring cars, and probably the best (or pretty darn near best) Stadium truck Racer maker (the famous RC10 GT), in both nitro and electric configurations. When they announced the Nitro TC-3, everyone paid attention. Serpent Impulse with Mugen MT12 Turbo -- Erwin8r in Los Angeles, 10:13:05 04/10/02 Wed
I finally got the Serpent up and running--wow! This car is FAST~!!! I thought my HPI Racer 2 with a Mugen MT12 and a 2-speed was fast, but this thing is in another league. I think that it might be as much as 10 MPH faster. I used the Albertson's parking lot (cleaned nightly) at midnight for my testing grounds. The car fired right-up on it's own Serpent starting box--I let it come up to temperature before I started to wring it's neck. It accelerates briskly, gets up to speed REAL FAST, then, just when you think you're opped-out, it shifts into second! Handling was a no-brainer, though the foams mounted on it are better suited to a smoother surface. I should have mounted a set of slicks for this session. The car powers nicely through the corners, and brakes predictably, though care must be take as the front one-way diff makes for end-swapping if you hammer the brakes. The car is basically bone-stock, save for the diffs and the wheels/tires. Serpents do come with threaded aluminum shocks, so that's a huge bonus up front. IT's got MPI Servos (off-brand, but very good servos), an 1100 NiMh batterypack, and a Futaba 113F receiver. This will probably be the car I race at Crystal park.
The other car I "tested" in the Albertson's parking lot is my Kyosho MP7.5 Kanai Buggy. I recently mounted an RB S7Worlds motor, along with a Fioroni clutch and an RB pipe with a Picco header, so it was time to run it in. Sure, the asphalt is not the ideal medium, but I couldn't wait to get it going, so the parking lot it was. I first tried to start the sucker in the living room (note to self--open ALL windows and doors next time!), but it was way too loud. Once at Albertson's, I mounted the sucker on the Nuova Faor startingg box, gave it a few good "touches," and she fired right up. This sucker is LOUD! I set it down, reversed the servos on the Futaba 3PJS, and let it warm up a bit. Then I got on the gas. And this sucker launched! HARD! It was off in a wild caucophony of noise and blue smoke! I was doing donuts, jumping speed bumps, doing top-speed runs. This buggy is big, bad, and FAST! The motor is properly broken-in now, so I'll tune it a bit for optimum power, but honestly, it's already fast enough for me! The bugy, too, will see action at Crystal Park (the dirt track)very soon....
On a related note, I hear that Chris (Redlands) is nearly finished with his "skunk works" project in his backyard... Let's get Buggy Fest II going!!

Kyosho Inferno Mp 7.5 Kanai with RB Concepts S7 World's Engine... -- Erwin8r in Los Angeles, 11:36:02 04/01/02 Mon
Well, it looks like my buggy will be up and running soon. It originally had a Picco/POmega Super COmpetition powerplant, but I decided to go whole-hog and pick-up the same motor that Yuichi Kanai ran to win the World's Championship--that's right, an RB S7 Worlds .21 motor. It's sweet! I bought it off eBay, and it came with a Fioroni flywheel and clutch--sweet!! I can't wait to mount this sucker and rock! I'm also looking into some Fioroni shock towers, chassis brace, radio-tray brace, and knuckles--this thing will look and run good!!!
Also, a little birdie tells me that Doscholiday has an Inferno MP6 with an RB S7 Europa up his sleeve...what's up with that? Do I smell a Buggy Fest II coming on?!?!

- Well, after many great Nitro runs, I have decided to "expand" my knowledge into the electric field. I have just purchased this car you see below, so I will tell you guys how it performs and rides. I started out with electric about eleven years ago. I had a Bolink pan car with Budweiser logo's and also had a Blackfoot truck (which took me a long ass time to build, if any of you guys ever owned a black foot, you know what I mean, there were no "ready to run" back then). I have read several articles of Nitro vs. Electric, can't say that I would choose one over the other, so I will do both. -- Doscholiday, 08:44:35 03/27/02 Wed

- I agree with RCwhat, except that if you want to do some organized racing, you may want to look into the HPI Racer 2. You would have to buy an engine separately, but parts are everywhere for these things, and they are very easy to tune and fix. The only problem with the RTR cars is that you'll get a second-rate engine and parts that you'll eventually want to replace anyway. The Super-Size cars are cool, but parts are a bit harder to find, and your friends will more likely than not have standard 1/10th scale cars, so you might feel like the "odd duck out." FUN IN THE SUN -- Doscholiday, 16:03:00 03/18/02 Mon
Everyone Missed out. Erwin8r came over the pad on Saturday. It was a nice day so we decided to bar-b-q outside in the back yard. Ofcourse, Erwin8r brought all of his R/C's cars/trucks/buggies (you name it) and gear. I brought out all my vehicles and gear, we set up a work table and you guys should've seen us, we were building and stripping cars, trucks, buggies left and right. My back yard looked like a bloody hobby store. We turned on quite a few of them, and ripped apart pavement all day. Erwin8r finally got his new Kanai 7.5 buggy up and running, and I finally got my T-Maxx sparked up, so we proceeded to do a little 4 X 4ing. Russ, you missed out!!! After all that, we sparked up the grill, ate like wild cavemen, threw back a couple of cold brews, and called it a day. Fun in the sun, what can you say!!!

whats up guys, I'm in the market for a new motor for my truck (super nitro rally converted over to a narrow track mt, basically a super nitro rally with MT size wheels, the only diff between the 2 cars is the a-arm length). I'll post some pics tomorrow. anyway i'm looking for a new motor. Probably gonna stick w/ a .15 but possibly a .21 if it won't destroy my drivetrain. Any suggestions. Tower has the trin/picco .15 on sale for $150 w/ ps. Has anyone used this motor. I'm looking more for reliability than top hp and rpm #'s. do you guys think i'll be eating gears with the torque of the .21? thanks for any input.
[ Post a Reply to this Message ][ Edit | View ]
Replies:
- Yup, you'd be eating gears, and drivetrain with the .21. I was gonna do the same for my T-Maxx, but i would've spent over $300.00 in additinal parts aside from buying the .21. The people I was talking to said that (for my truck anyway) it was too much power, it would be really hard to control, and would flip over very easily by ripping open the throtle. I will probably go with a pico or something exotic, but stay within the .15. I'll let you know how my conversion goes, I think with the new engine and my CVEC pipe, that will be enough grunt for my truck! (NT) -- Doscholiday, 08:35:01 03/12/02 Tue
RC, I would suggest the O.S. .15 CV-R first, and the Trinity Picco .15 (TP135 or TP136) second. They are both excellent engines, and, with approximately 1.3 horsepower, will give your MT more than enough horsepower and reliability. The only reason I said the O.S. is first choice is that a lot of people race that motor, and hence it is fairly well proven in "extreme-use" conditions. Both of these engines have very positive reviews. (NT) -- Erwin8r in Los Angeles, 09:27:28 03/12/02 Tue

1/10 Electric Touring Cars (Tamiya TA093 Pro and RS) -- Erwin8r in Los Angeles, 15:57:23 03/07/02 Thu
Hey guys, I picked-up a couple of Tamiya RC Cars for my kids--they were used, of course, and they didn't come with motors, batteries, nor ESC.... Any idea on what to look for when I buy these? I know that the less "turns" a motor has, the "faster" it is, but I want to balance performance with battery life; and besides, at least at first, the kids probably couldn't use "hyper-drive." I mean, they need enough to spank Russman's wee little Micro RS4.... Any thoughts?

Okay, 1/10 Scale Sedan Racing... Who's the best? Any Tips? -- Erwin8r in Los Angeles, 11:23:49 03/06/02 Wed
Well, it looks like we might start the 1/10 scale wars first. 1/10 scale racing, to me at least, is a bit more fun because the cars are a bit more "realistic," and the parts can be considerably less expensive. Besides, most of us already have 1/10 cars...Doscholiday will be campaigning his Kyosho-chassised terror, I'll have my HPI and my Serpent, Nitro Chris will have his Kyosho (albeit 2WD), GoGoFast and NitroKim will each have Tamiya TA03's, and Hill Billy Andy will have his Associated RC10L racer.... We're waiting to see what Russman will decided-whether he's really got it in him to "rub fenders" with the gang, or whether he'll wuss-out and pit his "wee" Micro against the big dogs...

I'm fairly new to the RC world (no my name has nothing to do with rc cars, i'm making fun of RC51's) and am looking into building a track on the side of my house where you can see my car jumping. My question is what is the most popular racing surface (off road of course). I am renting a rototiller, wait did i just say tiller..hehe, this weekend to tear up the grass then i'll be using a small roller to even things out. I am most likely going to use stonedust for the racing surface as it packs down nice and tight, cheap, and doesn't make as much of a mess to the car as regular dirt. Any suggestions on surface materials??? or any other helpfull hints towards building a track??

- HPI RS4 Micro motor selection -- Russman, 16:45:01 03/01/02 Fri
My Porsche Micro is almost done (see last photo on this page). I received the orion Elite Modified motor the otherday. This motor is 2 1/2 more powerful then the stock motor (it should propell the 1/18 scale micro between 20-30 mph). This motor is actually smaller then the stock unit. Motor choices for this car are (from most powerfull to least powerfull are: 1) Big Bad Johnson (will suck your battery dry before you reach the finishline and they don't last very long) 2) Orian Big Block (requires new motor mount and raising deck to clear chassis) 3) Orian Elite Modified (coreless motor, high effiency). 4) HPI Modified motor 5) stock motor.
I'm putting a GMP wrap around heatsink on the motor. Magnetic fields decay with the increase of heat so you want to keep it as cool as possible. Gas cars are cool but too much hassle and require lots of support equipment.
I will report back once I get the micro going with the new motor.

Pull Starters, Blisters, and the Zen of it All.... -- Erwin8r in Los Angeles, 15:03:49 02/28/02 Thu
I see that one of our members is experiencing troubles with pullstarters. The problem isn't with the pull starter itself, but, rather, with the state of tune of the engine, and the overall knowledge of the owner. Basic set-up and tuning is very important--from suspension and chassis set-up, to needle position on the carb--it all matters. A properly set-up carburetor/engine will fire right-up on the first tug of the pull starter--if your RC Car or truck requires more than a couple of tugs, it's time to pull out the reference books/magazines and do a bit of research. I will post some links very soon to excellent articles regarindg breaking-in motors, carburetor set-up and general tuning. Do some reading. Take the time to know your vehicle inside and out. If anyone here has any suggestions or tips, please feel free to post them. We want to hear from you.

Also keep in mind that glow engines seem to have a "mind of their own" and can behave very inconsistently. You may have it "dialed in" perfectly one day and then have it run like dodo the next without having changed anything. An electric start usally can overcome the reluctant engine that rufuses to start because it turns it over much faster then a pull start. Ever try hand starting a glow engine? That's even worse the a pull starter. (NT) -- Russman, 16:58:50 02/28/02 Thu
- To go along with Russ, a simple change in temp, or humidity can change the character of the motor greatly. A worn motor can many times start easily when cold, but once warm will not keep running. A motor in good shape with a good tune can be problamatic to restart, after running 20-30 min. It is nature of these small motors. Advice.. learn to read the glow plug, and realize when the motor is making all the power it can, and resist the temptation to lean it a little more. (NT) -- Carl(FL), 07:37:30 03/01/02 Fri

Hey Mario, don't mean to be nosy, but why are you getting out of the R/C hobby? You seem to know a lot about this R/C stuff. By the way everyone, I purchased a new pull starter for my T-Maxx yesterday so I will be installing it tonight. Final note, what do you guys think about an associted RC 10 L?
Let me know.

PULL STARTERS SUCK! -- Doscholiday, 15:22:27 02/26/02 Tue
Ok, you guys are going to call me a "rookie", but, in this case I am, so I do deserve the bashing. Anyhow, here is my story. I purchase a T-Maxx a couple of months ago with some pretty cool hopped up parts. One of the hop ups (I consider a drop down) the previous owner did was install a "pull starter". Well, last Friday (after having trouble with my sons Kyosho pull starter and my other Kyosho pull starter) I tried turning on the Maxx. I guess I was so pissed at the Kyosho's that I managed to "rip" the pull string on my T-Maxx. I was livid!!! Why the hell would somebody convert from electric start to pull start? Can someone explain that to me? I really do not get it. Luckily, my second Kyosho GT1 McLaren is starter box, so once I get my electronics purchased and mounted, I will use that as my primary ride. Anyhow, I will let you guys know how the T-Maxx revival goes along with my other Kyosho. Looking into buying a Buggy too, would like to see how fast Lubric8r and Russman's buggies truly are!

A Sunday At Chris(Yucaipa)' House -- Erwin8r in Los Angeles, 13:17:11 02/25/02 Mon
Well, those of you losers who flaked on us missed a heck of a day! After we got to Chris' house (in Bum-f*ked Egypt!), we unloaded the mass of vehicles from Russ Subaru, Dug out Chris' Burns Buggy, and prepared for battle. I sent Russman and Chris to the market for carne asada and used the time to bring Chris' buggy back from the dead--geez, Chris, ever heard of WD-40 and a rag? LOL!! His buggy was so unused, the tires where literally stuck to their resting place, and had to be torn off to lift the buggy!! So, me, Little Erwin (GoGo Fast) and Kimberly, got to work: we donated a spare set of wheels/tires, a spare wing (his Lexan wing had seen better days), knocked-off whatever dirt we could and de-rust her as much as possible. Whew! That took some work! When Chris and Russ return, Russ fires up this tracked Snow Cat thing and proceeds to bore us to death with it's less than stellar acceleration...Still, it was cool watching this universal-terrain marvel get stuck in Chris rose garden...LMFAO!! Now it was time for the buggies....WOW!! These things are freakin'fast!!! Even the ol' Burns, once fired up, was a rocket!! Chris lit her up, and proceeded to make a couple of top-speed passes in the road in front of his house...awesome!!! That thing was ballooning the tires and making a great racket!! Then we fired-up my MP-6, and it sounded even more fierce! That thing is high strung! We were lighting it up: jumping, sliding, mowing some grass, and even flipping (Chris did this cool gymnastic-tumbler impersonation with his Burns....he got a 9.5 for execution, though his landing could use some work...LOL!!!). We even got my HPI Racer Touring car out there--I was drag racing cars that dared take my little racer on!!! The neighbors gathered to wathc the spectacle... After the fun (and great crashes--Chris managed to destroy a wing in under 10 minutes; a new record, for sure!), we sit back and enjoy a beer or two and some carne asada courtesy of Chris' bar be que....All in all, an awesome day! OH, and after careful consideration, I have to add: Buggies Rule!!!

- RS4 Micro "on line" -- Russman, 09:16:54 02/25/02 Mon
My MPI RS4 Micro Porsche 911 is operational. Ran two tank fulls through it last nignt. Ran the stock motor. A pebble got "meshed in" with the pinion and blew that out. I goes about 10-15 mph with the stock motor and a 13 tooth pinion. I should receive the Orion Elite Modified motor this week. That is supose to make this thing "insanely fast" (between 20-30 mph).
I'm also installing a set of ultra bright white LED's for headlights. These are the LED's that are used in fashlights and throw an incredible abount of light and draw very little current. My plan is to tapping into the battery pack with a resistor (and possibly a voltage regulator if needed). I will post the source for these LED's and instructions for installing them after I've finished.
Good burn this weekend at Nitro Chris's this weekend (lots of plastic flying in every direction!).
Word of advice: Don't give Chris any rear spoilers. He will just run out and shatter it without delay!

Aw, Sh*t, that's sweeeeet, RCWhat!!!!! Holy cow, did your car blow-up on impact? The flight characteristics of a rally Nitro car have to be nil.... I've hit that jump at least a fifty times (no bullshit) and not a single broken part, except for the wing. broke it about 10min after the pic on a nasty 40mph rollover. the thing rolled at least 10times before stopping, well its all in good fun. erwin i'll email ya a movie of some sick shit i do with it. Carl (FL): Here's a picture of Carl's Serpent in action: -- DAS ERWIN8R in Los Angeles, 10:22:57 02/22/02 Fri

It is an Impact (235mm on-road class). It has a Nova Mega EV-4 MS.15 big block in it (a .15 big block is a .21 sleeved down to a .15). He also has an 1/8 on road (MRX-3) that has a Nova Mega .21 EV-4 MS in it. The Serpent is actually a little wider than the HPI Super Nitro. The acceleration on these cars is incredible 1/10 0-100kmh in about 2.3sec 1/8 is less than 1.8-1.9 sec.

- What do you guys think about the Kyosho Megaforce? I am thinking of getting one. I already have a T-Maxx, and it is pretty awesome. Does anybody out there own a Mega Force? What are performance comps compared to the T-Maxx? Is a buggy the way to go? -- Doscholiday, 07:30:05 02/22/02 Fri

I'm actually getting out of the hobby, so I have a couple RC car boddies. The main thing I have is a T Maxx with lots of work, money and parts.
Many aluminum parts, ported motor, enought parts to build another T Maxx except for the fuel tank, plus many servos, pipes.
Taking offers above $800, easily $1500 worth of parts.

Pete, thanks for the tip! Now, what type of servo's would you recommend for my Kyosho MP6? I was thinking along the lines of Futaba 9302s or even a 9450...Pros? Cons? What type of radio? (NT) -- Erwin8r in Los Angeles, 09:21:31 02/20/02 Wed
- Re: Erwin8r, For 1/8 off road, I would go with the 9450 for steering, it's a bit of overkill for the throttle. !/8 scales need a lot of torque, and though a bit pricey, it is one of the best, if not the best. Radios: go with one of the higher end FM radios, Airtronics/KO/JR/Futaba all have excellent radios,go with the one you like. (NT) -- Carl(Fl), 11:20:42 02/20/02 Wed
- Re: Erwin8r, I use Hitec servos on my mugen, and serpent, and am quite happy with them. I would find a servo that has at least 55-60oz torque for braking, go with a metal gear/bearing servo. You do not need a real fast servo either, a.16-.22 transit time is fine. (NT) -- Carl(Fl), 10:22:56 02/21/02 Thu
- Re: I almost forgot, be sure to get a throttle return spring, or electronic failsafe, I have seen several $600 motors destroyed for the lack of a $3 spring. (NT) -- Carl(Fl), 10:27:17 02/21/02 Thu
- Re: Erwin8r, My electronic failsafe is set to close the throttle, and apply a small amount of brake. It takes over if 1.signal from the xmitter is lost 2. excess interference(2 xmitters on the same freq.) 3. if the Rx battery pack goes below a safe voltage. (NT) -- Carl(FL), 12:22:55 02/21/02 Thu

Nice site Erwin8r -- ChrisG_TLR (Boston), 14:00:11 02/19/02 Tue
Hey Erwin, whaasssup? Just surfed over from the TL board to check it out. Nice site design man. I don't know much about r/c cars but that little beemer car you have looks sharp. For anyone who doesnt know of Erwin, this dude knows his technical shit.
So does this mean that you & your L.A. crew will now be racing around little mini vehicles instead of bikes? It might be better suited for you guys anyway...I mean, slozak's R6 is just about r/c sized anyway so it would be an easy transition...the speed would be just about the same, less chance of injury, and you all might finally get cheaper insurance. keep up the good work and good luck with your new R/C site.

I bought it on eBay, but I've done a few "Hop-Ups" to it already. The car is an HPI Racer (not "2" as I previously thought), with a Mugen MT12 .12 race motor, Race clutch, HPI HD Aluminum motor mounts, MIP CVDs, Paris Tuned Pipe, and Aluminum belt tensioners. I've since added an HPI HD 2-speed transmission, a carbon "Y" brace, HPI Aluminum threaded adjustable shocks, and a racing flywheel. I had to upgrade shocks faster than anticipated when my pal Russ T-boned a log with my car at about 50MPH!!!

Weclome Aboard! -- Erwin8r in Los Angeles, 10:40:20 02/19/02 Tue
I'd like this board to become a meeting ground for individuals that are as enthused by the entire Remote Control Car/Truck/buggy theme as I am. We will cover a range of topics, from the micro-engineering involved to the putting our money where our mouths are and driving these things. I hope this site becomes a place where people can ask questions freely and have them answered by fellow enthusiasts/hobbyists on any subject...be it radios or servos, painting or tuning...I also hope that we keep this site as "clean" as possible, though I will attempt to steer clear of censorship unless I deem that a particular topic or string of statements are counter-productive to what we are trying to achieve on this board. Let's remeber that there may be children reading this board...I will try to moderate in silencio, and you should feel free to e-mail me with any questions or concerns. A short list of "rules" will follow shortly.
Okay, enough of the mumbo-jumbo, let the posting commence...
