Angel Bhathal is heading off to conquer the world, and compete in the “Miss World Canada Pageant." People can vote online Angel at www.missworldcanada.org. (HANDOUT)

Angel Bhathal is not only a friendly and beautiful Manitoban but she’s also heading off to conquer the world, and we can help her!

She is about to compete in the “Miss World Canada Pageant,” which she described to me as follows: “Dear Laurie. This is not your typical ‘beauty pageant,’ as it is also a fundraiser for Variety — The Children’s Charity, and includes a contestants’ fundraising category in the judging criteria.

“I find this aspect particularly appealing because it enables young women to feel empowered based on what they do for their community, as opposed to simply focusing on appearance. The pageant’s theme is ‘Beauty with a Purpose.’ ”

Works for me, and it appears to me, folks, that Angel, the only Manitoba contestant, is more than worthy of our support.

Despite being a busy pharmacy student who is doing a 40-hour/week practicum, juggling exams, participating in a band and being a primary caregiver for her grandma, she has also managed to take part in the pageant, organize a major fundraiser, while driving community awareness of what Variety and the Miss Canada World Pageant stands for.

Other community involvement includes supporting charities including Osborne House Women’s Shelter, the MAC AIDS fund, Children’s Miracle Foundation, and many more.

Not just another pretty face, Manitoba’s future Miss World Canada has substance.

So how can we help her?

Well first, there is a “people’s choice” segment of the competition, where we can vote online for our favourite competitor, and that would be Angel, of course, at www.missworldcanada.org.

Couple of other areas where she could use our support: First, she is still accepting silent auction donations to take with her to next week’s Pageant in B.C., as the event includes a silent auction to raise funds for Variety; and she is also accepting pledges in support of her pageant fundraising efforts for Variety at www.angel4mwc.blogspot.com. Deadline for all of the above is May 2.

Please give her all the support you can, keeping in mind that whatever the reason, giving to Variety, The Children’s Charity, is always an excellent investment.

Best of luck, Angel. Do us proud.

It's sad there isn't a SINGLE girl from Atlantic Canada, but not really surprising. I'm interested in seeing how this new format pans out. (NT)East Coast Pageanteer12:53:56 05/03/10 Mon
