PAGEANT WINNER

Posted By HAROLD CARMICHAEL THE SUDBURY STAR

A Greater Sudbury teen is headed to the Miss World Canada Pageant after capturing the Miss North Ontario Regional Canada Pageant 2010 held at Laurentian University Saturday.

"I heard her (Shelby Gobbo) name called as 1st Runner Up," recalled Keatha Walsh, 18, in an interview Sunday.

"I thought, 'Does that mean I won?' I was sort of shocked at first. I didn't know how to react at first. I was ecstatic to be there. I didn't know whether I should cry or be laughing. It was just a surge of emotions. But, it was a good feeling to know that I had accomplished that for myself, especially when you put so much work into it. It teaches you a good lesson: you can accomplish anything if you put your mind to it."
Walsh, who went into the event as Miss Sudbury District, beat 32 other contestants to win the honour and advance to the Miss World Canada Pageant in Vancouver next May. Walsh would be going even if she had not won, as she was one of seven contestants selected by a Miss World Canada representative at the event to compete in the national pageant.

The Miss North Ontario Regional Canada Pageant featured women from across northeastern and northwestern Ontario including the communities of Thunder Bay, Timmins, West Nipissing, Terrace Bay and Val Caron.

The pageant's second runner-up was Miss Thunder Bay Tegin-Lee Popowich. Finishing third and fourth were Miss Kapuskasing Jacqueline Skiffington and Miss Verner Jessica Brazeau.

Walsh is no stranger to the North Ontario Regional Canada Pageant. Last year, she finished fourth. The winner of the Miss Teen Sudbury title in 2006, Walsh said the strong finish at last year's pageant convinced her she should try again in 2010 and come a little better prepared.

"For me, it took a year to polish up a few things I knew I had to," she explained. "It was a good experience. I won the Public Speaking award last year, but I worked on learning more about Canada and Northern Ontario. I won the Scholastic Award as a result."

As Miss North Ontario Regional Canada, Walsh will now get to represent the pageant at public events over the next year, and the pageants sponsored charity -- Northern Ontario Families of Children with Cancer. She said she can't wait for those opportunities.

"I think it's very important to be a role model," said the Lo- Ellen Park Secondary School graduate who just finished her first year of bio-chemistry at Laurentian University. "It is one of the big jobs of winning the sash and crown, showing pride how you got there, being involved in the community. It is one of the reasons I was selected. I'm very involved in my community and being able to influence people. Being a pageant winner gives you more opportunities to speak."

To get to the final five, Walsh had to do well enough in a fashion show, formal wear, and opening number to be among the final 15 contestants. The 15 were then reduced to 10 and then to five. The final five each had to answer an impromptu question.
