FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) May 8, 2010 --
The Miss World Canada 2010 contest finale was held last night at Chandos Pattison Auditorium in Surrey BC by new Vancouver-based franchise-holders, Upstage This! Productions. The three hour long event came to a less than satisfactory end. The over-representation of BC candidates, poor choreography, missed cues and questionable voting criteria were only among a few of the major qualms. The Miss World Canada 2010 pageant featured 32 fantastic candidates; 12 of whom became semifinalists (6 reserved for special award winners and 6 picked by the judges) and 3 whom moved on to the finalist positions. At the end, Denise Garrido was Crowned - but the pageant was wrought with controversy.
Six (6) semifinalists were supposed to be reserved for the category award winners: Talent, Top Promotions, Top Fundraising, Best International Costume, Swimsuit and People's Choice. So who were the winners that were guaranteed a spot among 12 semifinalists? Sarah Davidson-Gurney (talent), Dona Sharma (Promotions), Poonam Punni (Fundraising), Sofia Teleguina (International Costume), Denise Garrido (Swimsuit) and Ziyah Karmali (People's Choice). But Ziyah was not announced to stand among the semifinalists, did not get a chance to answer the semifinalist position to move forward and was not recognized along her peers to the audience. The oversight was immediately brought to the judges attention by audience members but the judges remained unconcerned and the show moved forward without Ziyah. So who were the 12 semifinalists? 5 of the award winners ( Sarah, Dona, Poonam, Sofia and Denise) and 7 others (Angel Bhathal, Sherry Jobani, Sapna Seheravat, Jessica Tsang, Deanna Gold, Sidney Shindle and Lacey Budge).
Immediately after the pageant, President and CEO, Katherine Grefner, privately recognized the oversight to Ziyah and her family but no public announcement has been made. When questioned, the auditor (a woman identifying herself only as Christine) refused to comment. Ron Wear, Mr. World Canada 2010 and judge for the competition, said he was "shocked" and described Ziyah as a "top contender."

To add insult to injury, the plaque awarded to Ziyah for being the 'People's Choice' was misspelled to read 'Peopls Choice' and at a small ceremony this morning organized by Upstage This! Productions (to give the award to the winners) the oversight was not disclosed by pageant organizers to those in attendance and instead was brought to the audiences attention by the pageant host, Tanya Memme (who felt that this was an "injustice"), and Ziyah's supporters.

Katherine Grefner apologized again after the ceremony, in private, for not recognizing the matter. No resolution to the matter has yet been made.

*I* am not 'Christine' in the story LOL But holy CRAP! How could you not call up on stage the girl who knew like a month ago she was a finalist? How can you justify not stopping the pageant and saying, 'hold on, we made a mistake, we now have a top 13 instead of a top 12'. How can you just stick your head in the sand and pretend this is not going to blow up in your face? My god the girl deserved to be up there, now she will never know if she would have won or not. Peoples choise, was it free voting or paid voting because if it was paid ballots, everyone who voted is or should be entitled to a refund. Her entry fee, travel expenses, gown, preparation, everything she spent to be a part of that pageant should be refunded to her, What a shame, and what a disgrace. I expected a flop, but this exceded anything I thought would happen. Poor girl! (NT)Christi10:10:32 05/11/10 Tue
Quite the oversightTerri C13:29:34 05/11/10 Tue
I agree with Christi. This is absolutely unacceptable. This contestant deserves a full refund, and Miss World Canada Org would do well to issue a public apology as soon as possible and offer her 100 per cent of her entry fee back. This is certainly an issue that could plague them for years to come. It may be worth it to offer her a free opportunity to compete in next year's pageant, as well. I feel so terrible for the contestant who was ROBBED of her opportunity. I unfortunately am not suprised that something like this happened. If the quality of their website is any indication we can see where this organization is headed. I agree this lady deserves her registration fee refunded, public and personal apology, and free registration for next year (not that she would accept it). There was a past incident at MWC where during the Top 15 Swimsuit competition several of the judges were not seated to do scoring for 4-5 contestant presentations. This was noted by several people in the audience and a number of the girls. (NT)Pageant P.20:16:51 05/16/10 Sun
I'm not surprised this went down. I was in a pageant run by this company before and it was a horrible experience. All the owner cares about is the money so she's got that already, I doubt there will be a public apology made. (NT)ex-Participant12:08:41 05/23/10 Sun
