It could not have happened, this couldn't be... Her words had brought him swiftly back to their dilemma but before he could stop her, she was gone. His Echo had left him. His stricken gaze remained fastened on the horizon in the direction in which she had sped. She had been like day to him, a goddess of light and warmth that could fill every dark corner of his being with glorious illumination. Death had been her counterpart, the sweet embrace of the night. A cold feeling stole over him, a sense of loss to terrible to bear at this moment. Would the pitfalls of Life ever fail to capture the steed? Apparently not. Hooves shifted in the sand, their movement forcing his gaze away from that distant horizon. After all that had befallen them, after the bonds had been tied and the hearts melded, she was gone. He felt somewhat guilty for his grief, witnessed as it was by the other femme that had captured his love. But he could not hide it, the pain was too great. The tears he had tried to fight before were now openly spilled, crystalline droplets falling like diamonds down his auburn cheeks. He dreaded making the choice and now the choice had been made for him though with the same result that he had feared above all else. One of his leading ladies was gone, the show over, the curtain closed. Never would he behold her achingly beautiful features or inhale that intoxicating fragrance that was intrinsic to the fae. Her lovely voice would never again grace his thorns with sweet tones rivaling the songs of seraphim. Above all, never would he feel her satin pelt against his own or touch her delicately wrought crest with his muzzle, an action that had always seemed like sacrilege to the young stud. Her beauty would be desecrated no more, for she was lost to him. His ivories bared against the pain, the raw agony that sent molten hot rapiers stabbing through his very soul. Her image burned within his mind's eye, searing away all else until the very vision haunted him. Mocking laughter reverberated through the screaming confines of his mentality. Hadn't he wanted a solution to his problems? Shouldn't he be happy that the choice had been made? Oh yes, he was ecstatic. Stumbling steps took him further away from the spot on those cursed sands where she had bid him adieu. -I've got to get out of here...- he mumbled almost incoherently. The caliph's eyes were wild and his expression was a horrible mixture of sorrow, rage, and a small, barely perceptible hint of relief. But where would he go in his exquisite pain? The only place that had ever brought solace to him was gone. The realization brought a fresh wave of torture as if experiencing the loss of his childhood home all over again. Glimmering, tear stained orbs fixed on Death, pleading with her to save him from this hell he found himself trapped in.
