Scarlet nymph lay sprawled on the white sands, exquisite head pillowed in a shallow hollow of the crystalline grains. Midnight rivulets, long and silken, lay strewn on the soft ground, splayed into intricate patterns of rippling black ribbon. Thick mass of crimpled strands fanned in a sable splendor, the glinting, inky banner contrasting sharply with the whitewashed hills and valleys of the sands. Hide now gleamed softly in a high-sheen, shining naturally a burnished mahaghany, the molten, feverish tinniness vanished. Slender sides of her barrel rose and fell easily with her breath, which blew gently from large velvety nostrils in the small, daintily shapen sooty muzzle. Scythes, usually dancing in energetic prance, were settled in the mattress of diamond particles, the small, flinty hooves nestled in the white beach. Lashes concealing large pools, she lay silently slumbering, unaware of the trials and cares of the world, as it spun about her while she dreamt, held in a trancelike lassitude from which she might never awaken...
