Catching Rose's forward movement, she ducked her head to avoid that potentially lethal grasp the evil mare was seeking. Her ear however did not clear the grip of Rose's powerful jaws. A squeal emitted from the bay mare as she yanked away, blood flowing freely from her torn aud. Whirling, she presented her haunches to Rose just in time to receive the glancing blow from the mare's hind-hooves. The sharp flints skidded along REM's ribs leaving a wake of gashes and bruised ribs. Wincing with every breath, she whirled once more. Just as Rose turned about to face her, REM closed the distance between them, half-rearing in attempt to deliver strikes of her forehooves to the other's face. Realizing her initial mistake of staying too close, she dropped to the earth to swing her body about once more, hind hooves sent searching for anything in their vicinity.
