“Well, you know how I’m a big music fan. You know how I want to sing and rap and everything and I feel as if I should get a job,” I replied.
“But, what music got to do with it?”
“I wanna get a job at like a radio station or at a record label or something. I could upraise my horizon by getting a job where I could learn more about music. You know, like behind the scenes footage. It’ll help. You know what I’m sayin’?” I asked taking a chunk of the roll and eating it.
He nodded his head. I know I had no reason to try to convince him, but I kept on talking. “And, of course, I don’t want to more in the mall, a fast food place I really want to do internship because the regular teenage jobs just-“
“Girl, do you know how many niggas be up in there? I mean, they’d just be waiting to get a girl like you up in there I don’t think that’s a good idea at all. I don’t trust no nigga around you at all. You sure yo’ you wanna do this? I mean, I can help you get your demo and everything so you can go ahead and do your thang. You know all you got to do is ask,” He acknowledged sipping some of his drink.
I rolled my eyes. Stupid ass nigga just like my daddy, ignorant. He just don’t get it. I know what he thinks about me doing this anyway. He feel like rapping should be stuck with just the fellas and singing is for females, but he hardly want me to do that either. Reggie, he trys to support me, but I ain’t stupid I know how he mist really feel how this really is a big no-no. He wants things his way like Daddy. I mean, he lives in this family of these high mighty black folks and his daddy own an H-E-B and everything, but my family do too. I just don’t have it as easy as he does. I don’t see how he does, he got five other siblings! His goals are not my goals and I think he expects me to follow him where he want to go.
“Look, I know you don’t think I can do it, but I really can. I’m prepared for better and for worse. I’m set to do this, fa real. Anyways, I already went ahead and put in some requests for a job at some station and at Epic, so I mean what people saying don’t matter,” I said to him looking straight at him so he could understand where I was coming from. I was for real.
“Well, who am I to stop you? I’m sorry if I made you mad I just hate to see you disappointed if you get turned down. I don’t think I can trust those da-“
“I can handle myself, boyfriend. You’re not my daddy Reggie you keep forgetting that. I’ve made up my mind. I just wanted to have your support. That’s all. I didn’t ask for your approval. I won’t even ask my Mom and Dad, but they’ll know if I get the job. They can’t direct me what I want to do with my life. And neither can you…” I replied confidently.
“So, if you don’t?” He asked not even looking at me. “Then I’ll get the bullshit job you people want me to get, but I don’t give up easily, you know that,” I played with him laughing trying to turn the intense atmosphere to something a little more playful and loving. “Well, I know that. I mean, look at me. You been chasin’ me so how long?” He laughed admiring hisself in the spoon playful, “Damn, I’m that fine?”
“Shut up Reggie! You know I was so damn embarrassed about that. Oh my goodness you just don’t know!” I laughed hiding my face. It brought back memories.
