“Hey babe. It’s Reggie”
“Hey sweetie. What’s up?” I asked sitting at the bar drinking a cup of water. “Nothing. I just wanted to see what you was up to that’s all. Yall still at practice?”
“Yup. We breakin’ right now. It’s good to hear your voice sweetie,” I whispered looking over at Lyla them sitting and talking in the den area.
“Yeah, you too. Umm…say, I’m gon’ be running like ten minutes late. I gotta go get my sister from my dad’s. He gotta work and I don’t want Myesha there by herself”
“Yeah. I understand. I decided I want to go to dinner and then to the movies. I’m hungry like a mug boy”
He laughed, “Me too. That’s cool. We can do that. Then, I’ll see you tonight then. Look good. We wearing red and blue tonight right?” He asked. “Um, yeah we are,” I replied laying my head on the counter.
“Alright. I’m gon’ let you go. Have a good practice.”
“Alright. See you tonight. Bye.”
“Bye Macy,” then I hung up. Reggie always hangs up last.
I was really anxious to go ahead and get ready for our date. While practice went by smoothly and calmly I was glad. We went home happy today. Roshay stayed with me at my house while I got ready for my date. Roshay suggested to braid my hair and freak it out. I didn’t expect that, but I was glad.
After she braided my hair, I decided to get dressed. I slipped on my dark blue jean Tommy Jean hiphuggers that were low cut and my red tank Tommy red one sleeve shirt. I thought I was looking too fly to be fly. Fa sho! “So, Shay, what you think? How I look? Too much?” I asked looking into the mirror as she popped in B2K’s cd. “Relax, girl, you know, well I know, Reggie ain’t nobody, but I think you look terrific and he will too. Dang,” She replied dancing to “Why I Love You” We started singing it together and she started to put the beads on the end of my braids.
“Marcianna, Reggie is here!” Mama yelled from my room door like I couldn’t hear her. She walked in as Roshay put on the last bead. Freshly braided hair really hurts. I put on my socks and shoes as well as my earrings.
“So…the final product?” I asked nervously as Roshay and Mama looked me over. “You look great girl. Mom agrees. We put a great touch to you not a lot of makeup. Girl, dang, I’m good!” Roshay laughed looking from Mama to me. The girl worked me a miracle. I swear if we don’t work in music Roshay needs to be a cosmetologist or something. “Wait right here. I’m gonna go get my camera real quick,” Mama said running out the room. I just sighed. I mean, Darius could be downstairs and telling Reggie anything.
Mama came in and took pictures of me and some with me and Shay together. We walked on downstairs and Reggie was in the living room talking to Darius. I knew it. “Reggie, you ready to go?” I asked smiling at him.
Darius smirked at me with that girl-you-ain’t-all-that look, but I knew I was lookin’ real thugged out tonight. Real cute. I felt like an Ebony model or something or a black J-Lo. “Yeah girl. You, you are looking incredible right now. Roshay, I bet you did this,” He smiled picking up his car keys. “Oh, I couldn’t have done it?” Mama asked getting her camera ready.
“Oh yes ma’am. I was just wondering,” Reggie replied. I was just standing there hoping I wouldn’t break a nervous sweat. Mama took us some pictures once again. I couldn’t believe this. I think Mama crazy. “Yall need to go ahead and get ready and go. I mean, yall gon’ be L-A-T-E,” Roshay rushed us.
I gave Mama a kiss, Darius a head slap and Roshay a hug and we were out the door. Thompson kids were rolling by on their bikes and playing with toys and rolling by on their bikes when Reggie opened the door for me to get in. We drove in silence until we reached Golden Corral and he came to open my door looking so fine I was glad he was mine. Haha That was weak. So anyways, he was looking good. We dressed alike. He’s wearing a red “Tommy” shirt and blue jean Tommy jeans with black Tims and his replica of a crowned chain like Omarion has and iced out. He isn’t a very flashy person though. He’s the sweetest person I know. He has the cutest smile I swear it could belong to a celebrity. He kind reminds me of a younger version of Morris Chestnut. I stand 5’6’’ and he’s 6’2’’. Can you imagine? He’s really into basketball. It’s his life besides his family and his passion for art and science, which both subjects I hate. I found out a lot about Reggie over time plus he’s overprotective. See, he’s adopted and he’s really just settled ino a good family when he turned 14. He’s been in a boys’ home until he was 10 and when he came out he was in seven homes for four years. He just met his sister when he turned 14 and they put them in the same family together and a rich one at that. A black family. She was two at the time. His brith mother died last year from AIDS, but his dad has come back in their life to share “quality time”, but they not living with him and he isn’t fighting to regain rights. From what Reggie says he told him, “I think you two are better off with this family” and he agree. He don’t really care what his dad does. Reggie ain’t hearin’ that. He’s 17 and he’s about to leave this pad. His adopted parents Mr. Bruce and Mrs. Virginia Ellis are his adopted parents. He loves them to death. He swears he’s be dead if they weren’t around to come save him from the services. What I love is Reggie’s body. He’s so strong and built, but gentle to the heart and it shows when that boy smiles. Oh, did I mention he can’t stand my babies B2K? I don’t appreciate that, but I deal with it. He thought they was pretty tight at first until I begged him to death about them drilling him with B2K trivia. Now, his sister’s a fan, but he’s just out of it like so many other boys I know. “B2K, what else do you know?” He always asks me when I talk about them. Besides Reggie, he know I love me some Raz B. He’s actually the first yella boy I have ever been really interested in. That was until I saw the raspy voiced player of Raz B of B2K. He’s juts amazing to me.
“You wanna go ahead and get a table Macy? We can get our food first ya know, it’s a buffet,” He explained sticking his car keys in his pocket. He talking like I’ve never been to Golden Corral in my life. I just nodded. I wasn’t gonna get crunk so soon in the date. We got our table and headed for the food. I went to get a plate and ran to get two rolls. I’m obsessed with bread. I looked at my hands standing in line to get some mac and cheese and my hands were shaking. Tell me, why am I so dang nervous? I mean I know I’m nervous, but I didn’t think I was THAT nervous. Well, I hadn’t been on a date in a while and he’s so different now. He’s masculine, tall, fine as whoa and that kind of makes me look like his daughter or something. I got my plate first and headd to our booth. Ugh, now I have to use the bathroom. I hate this. I took a sip of my Sprite as he headed this way. “I’ll be back. I gotta hit up the ladies room” I told him and he laughing replying, “All right.”
I think he noticed I was scared or in other terms nervous to death. Not to death, but I was nervous enough that I had to use the restroom.
“Sorry about that,” I replied clearing my throat and sitting back down. I looked him in the face. “You got problems” I said to myself. I said a silent prayer and began to eat.
“You know, I sent in a second letter to Duke and USC. I ain’t got no, uh, ya know, replies back yet. I’m hoping I get one soon,” he striked a conversation. I swallowed some of my mac and cheese, “Im sure that have got to be considering you. I mean, you are an awesome basketball player. Baby, you could rite your own plays. You know I have faith in you, your family does, so don’t sweat it. It will come,” I assured him with a smile. He smiled back. I get it! You did this to try to loosen me up a bit. I kinda like…
“You was nervous huh? Don’t be nervous. I ain’t gon’ hurt chu or nothing like that,” He smiled again just staring at me kind of made me feel uncomfortable. “I was nervous a little bit I must admit. I ain’t been on a date in a while, so you know. I’m cool now though and happy to be sitting here with you. You know what? I got, well I been thinking about…” I began nervously. “A job idiot! That ain’t hard to say!” I yelled to myself in my head. See, I had been thinking about getting a job to start teaching myself the word of independence. I’m spoiled. I know it even if Mama tell me I’m not, I am. She is too, by Daddy so she don’t know what she talking about. I want to really get an internship or something at any radio station or record label that’ll take me in to view what it is to be around hip hop and r&b music all day long. I mean, anything. I’d clean, answer phones, anything. I love music. That’s one of my top goals to make it in the industry of music. Who doesn’t? Yeah, I heard it was hard, but how will I know if I don’t try? Mama, of course, still believes real young ladies don’t try to find the easy way out by trying to sing all the time. You better when you’re taught the hard way. That’s a bunch of bull if you ask me. I mean, what SHE know, she always had it easy. SHE TRIPPIN! I was overthinking everything in my head totally ignoring Reggie all of a sudden.
“What were you gon’ say girl?” He asked curious but confused.
