Good Morning, Loyal Lallypals,

We have deer all over the place here. During the winter, a large herd of deer romp in the huge field across the street from us. It doesn't matter that we see these animals every day, early morning and at dusk, and have for 40 years, it is a thrill each and every time we see them. We hollar at each other to come look at the deer, and stand on our front steps in quiet awe. They're beautiful and graceful and most of the time, there's at least one baby hopping around merrily. These deer, or the offsprings of the deer from 40 years ago, know us, too. They raise their heads, twitch their tails in warning, and go back to looking for food. We're on a first name basis with them.

Yesterday, the deer found the tiny pieces of the flowers and trees in our back field. We have thousands of flowers, trees, and bushes in that field. They're not so awe-inspiring when they're in chomping the not-even-discernable green leaves and buds. We run out to see the deer when they're across the street in David's sister's field and talk about their beauty, marveling in the Magic of the scene, then we run through the house and greet these same deer, who have made a transformation as they cross the road into OUR field, and are now demons from Deer hell.

Yesterday, they finally found edibles in our back field. David started clapping his hand and hollering at them, I followed suit, and there we were, out on the deck (which is 12 feet above ground level, so we're quite visible to the deer, both clapping and hollering at the herd. They didn't even look up from their munching. "It's no big deal. It's that bald guy and wacky lady. No problem." We threw things at them, which was ridiculous because neither of us can throw that far, even when we were, ummm, in better shape and playing sports. Fifty years ago. Then David started barking. And yodeling. and making some noise that sounded like a corkscrew being pried out of a wall. I couldn't help because by this time, I was laughing so hard, I had to go inside to compose myself. Finally, not for anything we did, they sauntered slowly into the edge of the woods, still in plain view, and I swear I saw one of them flip David the bird.

Enough blathering.

He had to SEE the frog. Not meet him, perhaps -- he made a brief sign against evil-- but see him. Above all else, he needed to know: had the man --if he's a man -- aged.

"Certainly he's a man," he muttered to himself, impatient. "What else could he be, for heaven's sake?"

He could be something like you, was the answering thought, and a shiver ran up his spine. Fear? He wondered. Anticipation of an intriguing philosophical mystery? Or possibly ...hope?

[> I love our deer too. The herd isn’t as large as yours but developers have taken so much woodland in our area, they’ve become our “outdoor pets.” I used to feed them dried corn in the winter when food was scarce and then buy gallon containers of Liquid Fence to keep them out of my gardens in the summer. Go figure?! Animal people, right? MIL took over feeding deer, we feed the birds and I still need Liquid Fence. Because you’re so right - they do flip us the bird, but it’s a fluffy white one LOL.
