Gwenneth wisely decided against questioning Rio further in the matter of the Seren'no, the Forgotten Lands, though her head was spinning and she yearned to hear more. It had been a long time since she had been so excited about something, and she could guess why. All of her life, she had been occupied solely with delving into the mind of her boy, of trying to wake him. Now, suddenly, that matter had become secondary; what was most important was travel, the obstacle of the Hedrons before them and the prospect of entering the Seren'no. Her feet felt light as feathers as she jogged along, and she stolidly ignored the small core of weariness in the back of her mind. The Break was still far in the future, if it came at all, and there was now great chance of waking the boy in time to avoid it. There were many months, perhaps more than another year, ahead for the liren Gwenneveire before her mind collapsed for lack of the lir-bond. And she had hope.
::Folly it may be,:: she commented in the shared mind-link, ::but I tend to agree with Rio-- I believe it is needed. It will be a momentous challenge, traversing the mountain pass, and it will strengthen the bonds between our young friends for them to endure it. What's more, I believe they can do it. They have a very capable guard.::

Angie blinked hard in utter disbelief. She had seen Cheysuli and accepted them, had seen a housecat the size of a puma and had accepted that, had seen Jellicles and even brought herself to accept them...but this.... A humanoid figure, perhaps a bit shorter than Angie herself, carrying what was unmistakably a pair of enormous wings.
Wings.
Angie's mind was still reeling when Jeff staggered up.
"What?" he gasped, completely winded. "What was it, what happened?" He looked around wildly.
Angie shook her head, for once at a loss for words. At last she managed to say, "I'm not sure."
"What's that supposed to mean?" Jeff's alarm was growing as he watched the two g.irls stare around--Alexis was even scanning the sky--in discombobulation. "What did you see?"
As best she could, Angie described the creature. "But I only saw it a fraction of a second," she admitted. "It was right odd...." She trailed off, troubled.
Jeff leaned against a tree, still breathing heavily from his dash. Well, what's to be done? he wondered. At last he sighed and stood; it was no good to stay in the same place, it was frazzling their nerves. "We'd better keep moving," he decided. "We'll be careful, of course-- if you see it again, shout!"
As the group began walking again, Jeff frowned thoughtfully. "Either of you know how to make a weapon of some sort? I mean, we don't know what kind of stuff we'll run into, and it would be good to be prepared."
"I made a bow once," Angie offered. "It broke. I didn't have good string, mind. If we could find some, I bet it'd work fine. I used to have a spear, but I lost that..." She shrugged. "But it's a good idea, Fuzzy. We should try to make some."
"What's that?" Jeff asked, startled.
Angie grinned her devilish grin sidelong at him. "Fuzzy. It's your hair..." She giggled, and watched her feet i.nnocently.
"What's wrong with it?" Jeff asked, patting his hair. "It's a bit matted, sure, but I haven't got a comb."
Angie laughed heartily. "Comb? You really never have left that city, have you?"
Jeff looked at her sharply, pausing in trying to untangle a particularly stubborn knot in his dark red hair. "...How...? How did you know I grew up in a city?"
For an instant, pure panic filled Angie's mind. I blew it! I blew it! she screamed internally. The next instant she was calm and rational again, and replied without hesitation. "It's not hard to tell," she said tauntingly. "Your coat has buttons, you wince with every step on those bare feet, and besides-- you have an accent."
Jeff stopped, mortified. "I do not!" he cried, perturbed, and jogged after them again, still working on the knots in his shoulder-length hair. "...Do I?" he asked Alexis anxiously.
Angie snorted derisively and smiled to herself; crisis number one successfully averted. She would have to be more careful in the future.
