Vaughan, this thread and your message has caused me to re-examine this episode and, just as history needs time to put events into perspective, so I have reached a new conclusion about it in the light of learning that there is, indeed, space for a Volvo Penta engine.

The Volvo Penta dealer in the marina in Italy sent a qualified VP mechanic to evaluate my request for an engine quotation and all my contact subsequently was entirely through him as he was fluent in German (as I am), having previously worked for Volvo in Germany, while my Italian was limited, and although my wife was aboard and fluent in Italian she was totally non-technical about the engine requirements.

After the first session of examination and measurement Luigi (as we shall call him) returned with an assistant Pietro (name also changed) and some more checks were made. We all then sat down with a glass of wine to discuss the way forward; it was then that both mechanics stated their opinions that a Volvo Penta had insufficient space as the distance between engine bed and cockpit sole was too little and the engine bed itself would have to be significantly modified to take the different engine mountings. No drawings were produced or concrete dimensions given.

Then the offer was made to supply a new Yanmar 2GM20 that Pietro could obtain through his uncle who had a Yanmar sales agency and which could be slipped in with little or no modification to the boat and that much of the Yanmar ancillary components could be retained. I was assured that the new engine would be guaranteed normally by the VP agent, while all work would be done by these two under the control of the VP agent with the full involvement of Pietro, who usually worked for his uncle and was a qualified Yanmar mechanic.

I later received a formal quotation from Luigi (who worked for the VP agent as an independent) and which I accepted, believing that this offer and invoice route was because of the exclusive terms of the Volvo Penta franchise.

The work went ahead and Luigi and Pietro made a first rate job and I have nothing but praise for their workmanship and the engine itself. However, in retrospect, I now believe that Luigi hijacked the work from the VP agent and deflected it to Pietro and his uncle using the fabricated reason of lack of sufficient space.

Ah, Bella Italia!
