For two years I have kept my new cable e-mail address totally spam-free (not one in two years, incredible, isn't it?). I did this by giving my address with utmost caution to only friends and known, trustworthy contacts and when buying on-line etc., I have a disposable inbox with MyRealBox.com, a free service for mail offered by Novell, where the cr@p piles up and I do a mass delete about once a week and sometimes abandon it completely and create a new one.

So, my prime address was free from spam - until now, that is. Yesterday and today came the ludicrous 419'ers, the Lads from Lagos with their heart-rending requests for help by a relative of some disposed despot in getting many millions of US dollars out of some war-torn African country - ya'll have had the pitch.

Now, these mails are laughable in their expectations of gullibility of the recipient and the obvious errors made. The almost deliberate mistake in the last one today was to include a long list of other possible punters in the cc: distribution list - my friends in the Trapper bulletin board - IT WAS YOU !!! This wanker had obtained a list of all those who had contributed lately to these debates and I was one by letting my golden rule lapse just here by including my prime e-mail address in my postings. Never again.

The original Yanmar 8 in my 1997Trapper 300 has finally died and it is not rebuildable. I'm looking at a Westerbeke 12c as a suitable replacement. Anyone had any experience with this combination? I must have one of the few 300's in the U.S. sailed here from the UK. Thanks

I have a trapper 300 with a selden mast, has anyone lowered their mast without the use of a crane? As it pivots backwards on a single bolt I was wondering if it can be done with with some sort of A frame arrangement fixed on the foredeck, or will I have to pay the ridiculous marine charges for the service?

There is a Trapper for sale in Oslo. According to the ad, it's 850 cm / 29 ft. long with 6 berths.

I do not readily see which Trapper model it is referring to (from the owner association's web pages). What have I overlooked? (I know nothing about Trapper boats.)

Was I the only one who noticed this?

I had a mad panic last night when I checked on this board to discover that it no longer existed. The service provider was still there, the link still worked, but when you clicked on it, it said "board 106963 does not exist".

I checked it through every link on the main site, searched for it through the voy database. Nothing. I emailed the providers twice by different routes to try and see if they had a back up, I even started to register for another board but that produced error messages.

This morning I checked my mail to see if Voy had replied, they haven't. I just wondered if it was still missing, and hey presto it's back.

I'm beginning to wonder if it was just a bad dream!

I have moved my Nasa Clipper echo sounder from my previous boat into my T250. It worked perfectly before but now randomly shows the proper depth or "out". I have adjusted the averaging but this makes no difference.

I have contacted Nasa who tell me that they hear of these problems on balsa sandwich GRP and suggest removing the inner grp skin and balsa then bond the transducer to the outter skin.

This sounds a bit radical to me....have other Trapper owners suffered this problem and how has it been overcome?

I need a new tiller for my T500 but have no reference or plan for the boatyard to use. If anyone has their tiller off could they post me a message so I could send them a large sheet of paper, envelope, postage etc and request a tracing of the tiller shape??? I can't think of another way around my situation... Which woods are most advisable for the laminated version? Is the laminated version better than a solid wood version? Any advice welcome.

This is my first time on this post bag and I must say its very informative.We own a 300 called "Running Bear" and shes in Chichester harbour.My question to all you 300 owners is: Has any one fitted a Vetus 11hp 2 cylinder M2.C5 marine diesel complete with a prop shaft or Sail Drive?The Vetus is heavier than the Yamar 9hp but it has "indirect" cooling as against raw sea water.Further to this I would like to know of any Rallys in the south of which can join in & become a members of the 300 club.

I own Trapper 501 Cbeagle2, sailing out of Dover.
She has a Yanmar 2GM engine, 7/8 inch shaft. Im lucky to get 4.5 knots in flat water with a clean bottom.
What dimensions should the propeller be?
I have heard that the 2GM needs a 14/10, but the clearance at the P bracket is not enough. Can anyone help, please?
Does anyone else have a flexible join after the gear box? Mine is straight through to the P bracket, which Im told is common.
However, she sails very well.
Looking forward to a few months in Europe next year, with the aim of reaching Sweden, and in 2005 doing a trip around the British Isles. Sponsored by my younger wife who is carrying on working. Aren't they wonderful.

To all South Coast TS240 owners or enthusiasts

Four TS240s are meeting in Portsmouth Harbour on Sat 27th September for a day sail, possibly to the Folly Inn, returning to Portsmouth in the evening for a meal.

Any other TS240s in the area would be welcome to join in or other TS240/250 owners/enthusiasts would be welcome to come along as crew for the day subject to space availability. Please email me for details if you are interested.

Apologies to Frank for the date coincidence but this has been planned for some time and two of the participating boats only have one day free so would not be able to make it to Yarmouth and back.

Building on Richard's suggestion, let us have a sail-in to Yarmouth IOW meeting up c. 18:00 Saturday 27th.
If there are nasty northerlies, switch to Lymington.

Objective, meet Trapper owners, and plan an event or two for 2004.

Richard and crew and myself and crew met up at the Southampton jumble last weekend. An idea that came out was a card to put on Trappers we come across, promoting the Association and inviting contacts.
Strange as it may seem, there are some out there with no internet access.

After 23 years the cockpit locker lids on my Trapper 500 were finally breaking up, with the ply top starting to lift from the three-sided solid teak frame, or rather, the frames hanging down from the hinged tops. I had intended to do something about them for years, the teak veneered ply looked crap, the rubber edging between it and the frame was long gone and generally they lowered the whole tone of the cockpit, always had. I decided to take them home with me and reconstruct, using the solid, three-sided frames, which were still in good condition and replacing the top sections with new marine ply, facing them myself with composition teak substitute, Tek Dek, a far more substantial material than a thin veneer layer and simulating a genuine deck with caulked seams.

It was an easy matter to remove both lids from their hinges but the starboard locker with its access into the boat’s interior was now open to the elements and would have to be covered – the port locker was only a shallow receptacle liner and would not let water into the boat. I was running out of time and wanted to leave the next morning – I had a 700km drive home and had to be back – and so I took the port locker plywood section which had fallen out of the frame when I removed it, and screwed it over the open locker. I felt pleased that I had avoided running around the marina or even further and having to wait to have some wood cut – we are in Italy and, well, things need a little patience sometimes.

It is only now that I realise from the complete starboard lid that the outboard part of the plywood section is not a straight line between the two side frame sections but a curve with a maximum chamfer at the aft end. Of course it is, how dumb could I be?

Now, at last I come to the point. Because I do not think that the port locker lid is a mirror image of the starboard one, could someone with a Trapper 500 from around 1980, please measure the width of the port locker lid at a few stations, particularly the aft end?

There is absolutely no urgency, just when you are becalmed somewhere and a bit bored – I probably won’t be able to go back to the boat this year so it will turn into a winter’s job. I will be forever in your debt.

Our Trapper 700 (35ft) "Fresh Start" has just been reviewed by Sailing Today and will be in the November 2003 issue. We had a great day sailing in the Solent with loads of photos.
Should be a of interest to all you trapper`s.

I know there were only a few (17 or so) 700`s built but if you`ve got one, or know of one, please let us know.

Is the Southampton Boat Show meet still on? If so what are the arrangements.

My trusted old yse 8 in my Tapper 500 appear's to have said enough's enough,
spewing out oil when asked for that little bit more than just tickover. When replacing with new what have people found to be the best fit ,performance and relability, it would be helpful to hear your views.

Our 501, Securus, has a slightly different look to other boats. She has been modified for my mother in law with a small diving platform on the transom and a hinged gate in the pushpit to make access easier.

She (the boat not the mother in law) also has rather more handles than most boats and a modified bridge deck and companionway step system.

As my mother in law ages she is less mobile and the time is coming when these things might not be enough.

I have known other boats where a block and tackle off the boom has been used to bring wheelchair users aboard (without their chair)

500/501 rigging is very 70's with a short boom and I wonder if this would work. Has anyone any experience of it?

I'm not sure if the main sheet block is used or if a separate fitting is required. I realise I may need to change the mainsheet block for one off a larger boat.

What about the topping lift? Presumably I should change this for a stronger line, any other mods required? my mother in law is about 12/13 stone I would guess.

I have a Trapper 300 (Scorcher, hull number 123). Where I berth, on the Humber, the yachts are moored bows on to a pontoon in a muddy creek. When reversing out of the mooring, our rudders often contact the opposite bank. Over the years, my rudder has bent and now has a serious crack in the starboard skin. I have had the rudder examined by a GRP specialist who believes it would be best to build a new rudder. One way to do this is to do a "cosmetic" repair and then lay-up a set of new moulds, but this would be expensive. Can anyone help me to locate a set of rudder moulds for the Trapper 300, perhaps for hire. Rog

This winter will see our syndicate attempt to replace the rudder bearings on our T500. I have heard about repairs, but has anyone physically replaced the nylon bushes, with what and from where. I would like to be prepared on this one as I have a feeling that it could be complicated. Thoughts please fellow T500 owners.

Whelp, it looks like myself and Michelle will be joining the Trapper fraternity :)

We've found a lovley little Trapper 300 in Ipswich. Hull's sound, sails are all new in 1999 and the riggings ok. The interior is a design nightmare and needs lots of work (like stripping out and rebuilding), but that is within the realms of do-able (basic carpentry / DIY).

She cost me just over £7.5k - hope that's not too over the odds for a Trapper 300.

Of course, this is subject to the survey on Wednesday - and I'm going up with the surveyor to see what he has to say.

The boat has been out of the water the best part of 2 years - don't know if that will cause trouble when she goes back in.

The engine is a 12hp Volvo Penta (from what I have read, the 9hp Yammaha was a little underpowered) which was, apparently, rebuilt 2 years ago - although the exterior has lots of rust patches (nothing I can't fix)

Now, I was wondering - seeing as this is Trapper Mecca for info - what problem areas I should look out for?

All advice and tips very warmley recieved.

I have the original Yanmar YSB8 in "Auriole" a 1977 T500. The exhaust system consists of some kind of composite steel flexible pipe which connects to a YCGB water injection pot & then rubber hose to the transom vent. The steel flexible pipe has fallen apart at a weld between what appears to be a thin stainles steel corrugated pipe & the mild steel end fitting. Presumably specially made up for Trappers originally. Yanmar agents not interested. Anyone any experience of this, or ideas where I can find replacement?

"Swiftsure" , a 1979 500 has the original YSB8 which has given me very few issue over the past 7 seasons. Starting with a quick flick to the starter key every time with the throttle at roughly 15%. Since last week end I have problems starting. I had to but the throttle up to 80% or 90% and it took 10 to 15 Secs with the starter switch turned on to get her to fire. Once started the engine seems normal. Ticks over fine and accelerates fine and seems to give normal power output but consistantly I have to go to 90% throttle and it takes tome to fire.

I thought it may be caused by throttle linkage or Engine cut out linkages. I have checked and lubricated these and found no real issues, all seems ok.

I tried bleeding the diesel line at the injector. No air present and a good supply of diesel being pumped and again , once she fires all seems normal.

My battery voltage is 12.7 volts and I tried the service battery which is charged to just under 13 volts: No difference.

I am beginning to suspect the quality of the Diesel. I purchased 10 litres in a Jerry Can from a mobile truck in West Cork 3 weeks ago while crusing. The problem seems to coincide with the first top up from the can! Does this make sense to anyone? Could "bad" diesel make the engine difficult to start?
I checked and drained the glass water seperator which held only a few drops of water.

Any other ideas?

Can any-one help as to a basic rig set i.e. Rake, tension and Pre bend.I have just replaced the rigging and didn't take too much notice of the origanal setting. too keen on getting it done and forgot the basics.
I have also contacted Graham re hydraulic seals and unfurtunatly Graham requires a ram seal not a pump seal. my mistake, Been a bit single minded as "optica" hopefully goes splash this weekend so I might even catch a bit of the summer

What a can of worms the wind instruments ended up being. Can I thank all of you that have participated. It strikes me that like cars, if you are a Ford man, Vauxhalls suck. My conclusion is that you pay loads of money for pretty instruments and have them ruined because a seagull likes to sit on your roundabout thats 40ft in the air. In conclusion, You pay your money you make your choice. I will return with my experiences of the NASA units that I have been donated.

Here at Hartlepool is a boat reputed to be a trapper possibly a 500. Well a 500 it aint! thats for sure, the only thing it has in common with a 500 is the cabin window.

The window is aluminium riveted in place which dates it to '76/78.

Its got a fixed swept keel thicker at the bottom than the top, HARDWOOD TOE RAIL and a reverse transom ,the forehatch is a proprietory glass unit recessed into the cabintop length is guesstimated at 26/ 27 ft

any ideas anyone?...Ive tried the 300/400 sites for photo's and they all seem to show the black toe rail

We have just returned from sailing 'Alkanet' (501) to the Baltic via Dulcibellas' route (Riddle of the Sands) thro the Eider River and Kiel Canal. We reckoned to have covered about 90% of the journey described by Childers (but without the drama!) The Southern Baltic is an iddylic place to sail and if any one wants any info about the trip get in touch. We met one other Trapper 28, reputedly made in Austria and owned by two Germans. We were met by nothing but friendship and were never bothered by officialdom once.

I suggested a meeting, but it seems that that is old fashioned, and virtual contact is this century. or should I say cool?

So, let us start considering an organised event or events for 2004 and maybe 2005

My sailing is 50/50 racing cruising, my ideas would be biased, so how about a virtual brainstorm to get what most people want.

I will start with a suggestion for 2004 or 2005.
There used to be a "Three peaks race", but it went the way of all things, specialisation, sponsorship.

I like the idea of "Three peaks in three weeks", sailing and walking, and this could be extended to "Five peaks in five weeks" by adding in places like the IOM, Snae Fell

The idea would be that people could join along the route and leave,to suit themselves.

I am thinking of buying a Trapper 300 for racing and cruising, mainly doublehanded. I am unsure if all Trapper 300 yachts are the same configuration, for example displacement, draft etc or is there a particular configuration which is slightly faster? Also, I would prefer a yacht with a roller furling genoa for the obvious advantage in handling by two people, or are their disadvantages in boat speed with roller furling genoa versus hanked/foil genoa? I want to be as competitive as possible whilst racing. I have heard that some Trapper's are home completed, does anyone have an opinion if these are as good as professionaly completed boats. Should a home completed Trapper be cheaper to buy? I hope to be able to buy a decent Trapper 300 for less than £10,000; is this feasible bearing in mind that I wish to be competitive racing.

Not so much a problem with the boat, more the skipper! Last week I completed my fortieth x-channel expedition in Star Trapper, ie eighty one way crossings, and quite a few single handed.

I must have experienced just about every conceivable weather condition from motoring non stop from Hamble to St Peter Port in a flat calm, to fog in the shipping lanes (forecast was moderate to poor - somebody else got the former & I got the latter), to three reefs in the main and what the hell am I doing here!

I report all this so new owners can have evidence of the seaworthiness of the Trapper 300 and confirmation of the old adage that it is the crew, not the boat that sometimes feels like giving up!

If anybody has any specific issues relating to my style of sailing or the T300 do get in touch.

Hi,
Looking for info on the trapper 300,have had one surveyed and there is some concern over amount of movement between keel and hull (the hull appears to flex alarmingly with the weight of the keel).This trapper has the additional lead on the bottom of the keel,have you heard of this being a problem with trapper 300,s with extended keel.Spoke with a friend with standard keel and he was of the opinion the hull / keel was rigid on his.The boatyard commented on the keel flapping about as the boat was craned out for inspection.There is nothing to suggest that the keel is loose,more a design / structure concern.I would have thought with the trapper racing pedigree that
this should not be a problem, although the surveyor was of a different opinion as to its suitabilty in rough conditions.Your comments would be appreciated.Can you suggest any other sites to contact.I have attached picture,does your keel look like this?

firstly my keel matches your photo. You may have gathered I had my extension fitted in 1986 when I had sailed the boat for a season My keel is rock solid (I hope!) to the hull. From time to time I check the keel bolts - all accessible in the cabin - but have not found them loose. I am not aware of any design/structure concern here. I cut a hole for
my e/s transducer just forward of the keel & my hull is a good 1" thick here - no possible chance of flexing.
I would have thought ANY movement represents a major fault that must be fixed. May be worth trying a decent socket on keel bolts to see if can be tightened. Any evidence of grounding as to the cause? Lower forward section of
keel is lead so any collision evidence should be clear.
Any evidence of undue water in the bilge? - any gap between hull & keel must lead to leaks. I agree with your surveyor re rough weather. I have been out in some really horrible sea states eg in the Alderney Race and I wouldn't countenance a flapping keel - no way!

Which is the boat - I have come accross a lot of them over the years

It doesn't have to be the original, but it does have to be road legal. I'm in the North of England, so I realise this may be a bit of a tall order!

The weekend before last when we tried to start our engine nothing happened when I pressed the start button. The warning lights illuminated and the buzzer sounded as usual. After a couple of goes I started it easily on the handle. Once we were moored up I tried it again and it started normally on the button, and continued to do so for the rest pof the trip. We had used the engine quite a bit earlier in the day and the batteries were fully charged. Could just be the button I suppose, but it felt normal.
Any ideas ?
