Well, I had the engine out again and ran it up after removing the little output spigot for the "pee-hole" under the cylinder head. A bit of muck came out with the spigot and after running a bit longer, water stared dripping out instead of steam. The cylinder head was also at a temperature that you could at least touch without burning the skin on your hand !

I'm guessing that Len and Fareham O/B Centre are both right, the waterways are blocked but not really really bad (yet). Anyway it still needs sorting out so, does anyone know whether are all Mariner o/b's are just rebadged Suzukis, i.e. would a Mariner 4hp manual be the same as a Suzuki one ?
