the Yanmar handbooks advise that if you get black smoke then you need to knock the revs back.

I think you have to make a judgement on that as they are fairly sooty anyway but visible black smoke means the engine is overloaded.

I've never seen details of a rev counter specifically for a yse12 but I've no doubt it would be possible to rig something up if you weren't happy with the black smoke advice.
