When I fitted a leisure battery to my 300 four seasons ago, leaving the small auto battery solely for starting the YSE 8, I quickly burnt out the original alternator. I took it to my trusty car accesory shop, explained the problem to Jim, gave him the amps etc, and he came up with a higher rated Lucas alternator, exact same fittings, for £48 as long as I gave him the old unit. I now have an alternator that has done the job ever since and Jim got a bottle of scotch last Xmas for his excellent service.
Conclusion: Alternator for car £xx in Accesory shop, Same unit in chandlers $xx times the power of 3 at least.
