I posed a similar question a while back when I was considering changing to to a furling headsail. I did loads of research and asked questions of sailmakers and 'experts' and the conclusion I came to was there is no doubt a furling headsail is a compromise even when factoring in the modern approaches to sail designs

It is certainly more convenient, some would say it was safer as there was no need to venture up to the foredeck although friends recently suffered all the sail unfurling in a F6 which caused some foredeck excitement.

Some of the reasons why I stayed with fixed were the simplicity, to have the right sail size, weight and shape for the conditions and better upwind performance.

The down side is I have to plan a bit earlier for instance when sailing into tight areas and I have read recently a good argument from a chap who maintained that he would not have been able to get his boat back onto his mooring following engine failiure if he didn't have furling.

I know of people who have a set of sails for the furler and don't use it as a reefing system but choose the sail for the day's predicted conditions.

For me fixed has worked so far and I'm happy with my decision. Maybe you could try furling out on a Friends boat first.

Brad
