Nick, I posted this cautionary tale because the Trapper 500/501 is vulnerable to this failure due to the laterally in-line shroud configuration - the lower shrouds will not keep the mast up with a failure of either forestay or backstay. In fact the backstay would be more critical; we did at least have the headsail luff wire and halyard for support. At the time we were close-hauled with full sail in a fresh (maybe F5/6) wind.

It seems the Rival 38 had a similar failure - the masthead toggle. Beachcomber was fitted with a cast s.s. toggle that broke at the thinnest point, where the lower (forestay terminal connection) clevis pin fitting passed through. In fact, the component would have been less weak if a smaller diameter pin had been fitted, thus allowing more sectional area of the toggle at that point.

The temporary fix was a substantial s.s. anchor shackle replacement, which, being wrought steel instead of cast, was a stronger solution. The original remnant of the top section toggle, all that remained, sits on my desck as I write.

As Anders points out, Murphy is always with us, especially at sea, when he brings his brother along as well.

Best, Brian.
