When we fitted the YSE12 we made modified brackets so that we could get the engine to fit onto the existing engine bed, so in effect we did what you are doing. we didn't use galvanising but simply painted them, however they were substantial bits of metal.

For me it was the natural way forward, I know far more about metalwork and engineering in metal than I do about fibreglass and I felt that the existing engine beds were very much part of the boat.

Our shaft was 19mm but reading comments by other people that isn't always the case.
