Nick, John,

"I don't know how the site works John, I'm sure Tony can tell us."

As I've said before, the site creates a single cookie so it knows who you are. It contains very little data and what is does contain is encrypted. There is no spyware, there is no adware. In fact it is a lot cleaner than the trapper site and this board, which creates about three/four cookies to cope with the click through advertising to enable commissions to be paid to voy - which is why this board is free. Pleased to say, I can't see any tracker cookies. If you don't believe me, then turn on cookie prompting if you have XP and see for yourself. I have searched the example site and the database and see no reference to the email address you quote. It certainly does not create any third party cookies which can be a bit dodgy. If you are not already doing so, I suggest you run both adaware and spybot. Both are free from download.com and excellent at cleaning systems. Also a good virus checker is Grisoft's AVG Anti Virus. IF you're not running any of these or similar, chances are you are infected with something anyhow.

phpbb has in the past been vulnerable to a couple of attacks but to my knowledge these were to do harm to the board rather than your PC and the security holes have been plugged. You are in far more danger from running windows itself than visiting this board! I feel somehow that you won't believe me no matter how many times I say this.

"One of the supposed benefits does concern me, that of self editing posts."

The editing of posts can be controlled at forum level - allowed, or not. Personally I like the feature as long as the user makes it clear the post has been edited and the context is kept. Its a matter of educating those who use the board with an FAQ. One posting type is called 'sticky' and usually only allowed by a moderator or admin person. This keeps the post right at the top of the forum as the very first message. Great for posting rules and FAQs.

"I've just had my answer from Deacons so there will now be a process of trials and experimentation, none of which will be visible from here for a bit but I'll keep you all updated."

I assume that's a 'yes' from Deacons then? :-)

Tony
