Kim, Thanks for your comments and I know exactly what you mean about over-complicating what needn’t be complicated. My first GPS (now just my backup to the Garmin) was a Trimble Ensign bought in the early 1990s and it didn’t have any NMEA output. So I really just used it fixed on the edge of the companionway giving me the lat and long coordinates, which kept me on my toes correlating to the charts. But it still works perfectly after more than ten years service – I really love it.

I must admit to being fascinated by the technology of GPS and the revolution it has brought to cruising. Gone are the days long ago when I used to crouch over the chart table while we pounded on into the grey North Sea, muttering all the magic incantations like: “Anything east, compass least, anything west, compass best” while the crew topsides were chanting in unison, “where the f*** are we?” over and over again.

I do have broadband and can see clearly where the delays occur. Tony’s site is fast, fast, compared to this one, which often hangs for me – and for each message that needs clicking on instead of the flat format that presents all messages in a thread to just scroll down. Actually, I am amused at all the passions spent about it, including my own. I had made the resolution to say no more about it but couldn’t resist your message. Thanks again.

Have a really great sailing season - and warmer nights.

Best, Brian.
