a far easier solution is to make sure your mast and rigging are set up right ..then reduce your mainsail until you have the right balance. A 500 will luff up with just a 120 genoa up in any sort of a breeze

I find that 3 rolls in the main is about right in a f3-4 and I still do 7 knots on a reach! Upright

Why does everyone think its a crime to reduce sail?
