Ian, you are right about the need to protect e-mail addresses - it is a tic of mine, as you can probably guess from another thread.

But your solution is no solution to modern spiders that trawl the net for addresses, they are sophisticated enough to strip the obvious deliberate errors, such as you propose.

Better to phonetically spell the "." and "@" components in the address as "dot" and "at" separated by spaces (although they be so far advanced now as to have cracked that one too) and place at the end as part of the signature. examle: joe dot bloggs at aol dot com

That does not protect against a manual trawl such as we experienced here a year or so ago - but that sort are less of a problem and do not result in incremental increases of spam as your address gets propogated throughout the spam lists - such as you seem to have experienced. Usergroups are the worst places to put a genuine address - guaranteed to get picked up and sold around the world - the only solution is what I once had to do, change the e-mail address.
