Giles,

Raising and lowering the mast needn't be that daunting. I have done it several times over the 15 years I have owned my boat using a wooden A frame with the feet lashed to the toe rail. It is heavy and I first used a sheet winch to draw in or release a line run though a block on the stemhead to the forestay but later found it helped to attach this to a tackle laid out on the side deck to gear up the winch. It goes up slowly without too heavy a load on the winch so good control. It is handy to have a mate just in case of a side wind at the wrong moment. You need another substantial wooden X frame in the cockpit

I think the winch on the coach roof is an adaptation. I have read of one done where the owner gave up on the hydraulics.

So far as the hydraulics are concerned I think it is an elegant system. If you are worried about the hose your local branch of Pirtek can fit you up with a replacement hose and end fittings. Modern hoses are fatter and steel braced (should be burst proof)but I got them to order in some of the original stuff which is textile braced and cheaper. I took Kim's advice and replaced the seal in the pump as the original allowed a fair amount of oil to leak past on each stroke. Because of that it was necessary to carry a spare bottle of oil to top up otherwise you could not raise the keel to the level of the locking pin.(Completely cured now) You might want to bear that in mind if the boat is new to you.

Hope you enjoy the performance
