Hi Neil: When I bought my 300 back in 2000, it had a totally knackered ungeared folder which, on occasions, usually in marinas, would only deploy one blade. Result, the imbalance felt like a piledriver smashing its way through the hull. I then fitted a fixed prop, but this caused so much drag, so I got rid of it quick.
I have a GORI two bladed geared folder which I am more than happy with. They are easy to fit and if like me at the end of season you remove the prop, you just slip off the blades with a allen key.
They are not as efficient as a fixed blade, but if you go for a reasonable make,I dont think there is that much in it.
You always get a hefty clonk as the blades deploy but this can be reassuring, also, you are less likely to get fouled, the blades fold releasing snag.
The GORI which I got from Sillette sonic(excellent service) cost about £300.
The folding prop by design will sit further back from the end of the shaft, increasing blade/hull clearance; less cavitation.
I really cannot think of any downside, only the initial cost. Regards John
