Any boat that doesn't respond to the increase in wind isn't the opposite of tender, it's an undercanvassed bath tub. (or westerly)

The 300, like the 500, is indeed a boat that can outshine others in light airs, but that's because it carries enough canvas to do so.

any boat can achieve hull speed in a full blown gale, but most people prefer to go sailing when there is less wind, and undercanvassed boats spend most of their time under engine.

If you have limited mobility, like my in laws had, it's best to sail under reduced sail and use the engine when the wind drops, but if it's sailing you want then you are going to need to use the "accelerator" properly and trim the sails to suit the conditions.

By the way, the tall ship I'm on in a few weeks time is very similar and will bury the rail quite happily in a blow, and she weighs 500 tonnes.
