In reply to: Giles 's message, "TS240 spinnaker pole downhaul" on 22/10/04 10:51:05

I have mine on the base of the mast. The size of the 240 kite is relativly quite small and so doesn't generate huge forces compared with other boats. I have infact twin pole system on Optica for raceing just like my old Flying Dutchman and am thinking of putting self launching poles on. The only reason to take the down haul further forward is to give a better angle on the pole so transmit the forces so the pole is under less strain. depending on how far forward you go, you will eventually have to "dip pole" gybe, big boat style this I find is hassle compared to an end for end.(I doen't do either as twin poles make it a doddle especially in stronger conditions) hope my rambling make some sense
Kim
