John, the lore has it - marvellous what snippets one can find on the internet - that the YSE was a copy from an original flat twin Coventry Climax engine from the 1930s, when Yanmar split the design in half to produce the horizontal single cylinder engine. Those were the days when Japanese companies en masse copied without licence or royalty payments.
