Dear Henry and Mary,
I can only offer my whole supprt and utter confusion on this problem, as I have know bent 2 pins.I THINK that it is some thing to do with the actuall raising and lowering action. I think ( actually am 99% certain) that as the mast is on its way up or down, it lifts up on its mast foot and the whole legth of the mast is used as a 30 foot lever with the fulcrom approx 2cm from the pin so mechanical advantage is HUGE. (To late to work it out) I used a crane facility for my last mast removal when I had to re-wire the mast and I just used it again for winter lay up and the pin is perfect. I also managed to break the mast foot in one up and down escapade, so I am know very catious of doing it with brutt force. the gentle clicking of the ratchet pawl on a 1 ton hand-raulic crane is peice to the mind when bouncing round the Thames.
