I suppose I just get wound up about the fatuous philosophy of “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” – the antithesis of preventative maintenance – that is getting parroted in this debate. If there was any validity in that we wouldn’t be changing our fuel, oil or air filters in our engines; we would still be running DOS in our computers and aircraft would be falling out of the skies all over. As someone who racked up more air miles than most during my service and business life I am very glad that intelligent people in charge of servicing those aircraft didn’t think like that. I suppose I am particularly sensitive about this forum’s deficiencies because I have lost MANY half-written responses by the program exiting the reply screen for no apparent reason (I am writing this in Word to be pasted into the reply). It may have something to do with the fact that I am using Firefox as a browser, but damned if I’ll revert to MSIE to get stability in one application. Rant over. Best, Brian.
