We had the same problem on our 300, which has a YSM8. Initially we avoided it by always closing the cooling water inlet seacock when we stated sailing and switched the engine off. The problem is failure of the pump to self-prime and we cured it by lapping the face of the cover plate on a fine stone (it wears through contact with the impeller - in our case it was very slight). You can also reverse the plate if the outer face is less worn. We also fitted a new gasket.
