Thanks for the replies, some of which we got on our return from the latest expedition - Queenborough via Havengore to Roach and Crouch. Encouraged by early advice here we spent a night on the mud in a creek near Havengore. The moment of grounding was almost imperceptible. The boat seemed completely upright - although you could see that the mast wasn't, actually. The thing was, we spent a bit too long over breakfast in the morning and hey, we were aground again! Woops. Which meant another whole tide in the same spot. And the rudder was now down too, which caused some anxiety for the skipper. It may sound weird but we enjoyed it - loads of birds, books to read, perfect peace. It was lovely. The mud was full of presumably molluscs which spurted little jets of water, so that it sounded just like rain falling. Definitely an experience to repeat, although preferably for just the one tide next time! And warnings about hard ground are well taken.
