I don't sail alone, so this doesn't present a problem to me.

A couple of notes though...

I have found rolling boom reefing can cause boom droop, though this appears to be down to technique. I can't explain how I avoid it but I know if I do it properly I can reef as much as I want and not have the problem.

I changed to slides sometime ago as I found the rope luff made shorthanded sailing more difficult. I don't have a gate as I couldn't find one to fit but I tie a line round the mast held up by a cleat on one side. The line is tied loose so that with the sail resting on it the bottom slider is just above the wider section of the slot.

I've never thought about the not reefing unless head to wind aspect, I've only ever reefed head to wind. However I have wondered about the strength of the gooseneck with proctors design and it has concerned me though I've never had a problem.

I find most of my reefinbg is of the genoa as it is by far the biggest sail on the boat and comes so far back it induces weather helm.
