please call it something other than IMTM. What you propose is a 2-division system without team marking. Calling it IMTM is completely misleading as it suggests a change in the marking, which is not the case. Call it "Ian's proposal" if you wish.

A 2-division system without team marking brings up a lot of new problems. Namely that good couples from otherwise poor universities will either:

- drag the other couples up into division 1, but then be of no help to them as they're on their own.

or

- be dragged down into div 2 by the other couples, subsequently not being bound to them and beating everyone else there easily.

If you seperate teams by aggregate ability you have to continue using this measure throughout the competition. If you want two divisions without team marking you'll probably have to let teams split up, e.g. the A QS is in div 1 while the A W is less good and in div 2.

But if we do that we lose all team-coherence, won't have a division 1/2 winner anymore and might as well just add up the scores from the days open for an overall medal table...
