Subject: I have no hard facts on professionalism or otherwise of the FBI. I'm not American, I don't know. My point is simply that legislation cannot combat individual homophobia within a police force, and that its simply incorrect to say that it can. I would also make the point that FBI oversight is not a universal panacea for all ills (more)

As for the point about the practical effects... I don't have any statistics to back me up. My point was simply that those of you arguing FOR the efficacy of HCLs don't have those either.

"6. It would result in increased public education and awareness.

7. It would result in more victims coming forward to report hate crimes.

8. It would increase reporting by local law enforcement to the FBI under the Hate Crimes Statistics Act "

Those statements are not backed up by any statistics or facts... no one has offered any such statistics or facts in the course of the debate. Until they ARE offered, all the "woulds" in those statements must be changed to "possibly", "maybe", or "might". I'm not saying I have all the answers, I don't. I just think its unfair to say that the anti-hcl havent provided facts, when if anything MORE relevant facts have been provided from that quarter than the pro-hcl one... regardless, the core of this debate has centred on opinion, which is fine. However, people have categorically stated that they have facts to back up their opinions... yet no facts are forthcoming.

I offer only my opinion: nothing more, nothing less.
