Subject: Welcome to the board John. Okay - here’s my two cents on The Great Debate. Well - at first I was pretty sure Drew was right. Then I was pretty sure Lance was right. Now I’m pretty sure that it’s just a bit too soon for me to make the judgment, one way or the other ... but the clock is ticking. (more)

I believe we’re about to get a little closer to finding out whether Lance or Drew is right, because of the mounting evidence that the Bushies lied about Iraq’s WMDs. People in the Defense Dept. are beginning to rat out their bosses, and people in the CIA are beginning to rat out their bosses. There are new revelations every day, and unlike so many times in the past couple of years where you had to search the internet and foreign papers for info on things this administration didn’t want publicized, this issue really is being played in the mainstream American media (CBS, NBC, ABC, PBS, and the cable news channels).

It began big-time about a week ago when:

On May 30, Lt. Gen. James Conway, the top Marine in Iraq, said, speaking about the hunt for chemical and biological weapons: "We've been to virtually every ammunition supply point between the Kuwaiti border and Baghdad, but they're simply not there." (This quote appeared in numerous mainstream media sources).

Now (this appeared yesterday morning) we’re getting stuff like the following from the Associated Press:

A former State Department intelligence official, who viewed classified intelligence gathered by the CIA and other agencies about Iraq's chemical, biological and nuclear programs during the run-up to the war, accused the administration of distorting intelligence and presenting conjecture as fact. "What disturbs me deeply is what I think are the disingenuous statements made from the very top about what the intelligence did say," said Greg Thielmann, who retired in September. He was director of the strategic, proliferation and military issues office in the State Department's Bureau of Intelligence and Research.

And this information IS showing up on the network news shows. It has exploded in the media (newspapers and TV) in the last couple of days. I only watched one network news broadcast last night (CBS) but this was talked about and the phrase “the administration has been accused by anonymous, high-ranking sources in the CIA of distorting intelligence” was used. (I didn’t tape the broadcast so that quote may not be absolutely accurate but it’s very close, and I have to say I was surprised to hear it presented like that). Yesterday morning the subject was talked about at length on Fox News Sunday, and even the ultimate neocon Bill Crystal had to admit that it brought the idea of the urgency of attacking Iraq into question. A handful of Democrats (none in leadership positions yet) are saying if the administration “distorted intelligence” it is an impeachable offence and they’ll push for impeachment.

How this will play out I don’t know. Colin Powel was all over TV on Sunday morning spinning like a top, so I believe the Bushies are worried that this thing has legs. Put it this way, if the case is made that Bush lied (you know - “distorted intelligence“) AND IT IS GIVEN SUBSTANTIAL COVERAGE ON THE NETWORK AND CABLE NEWS - then I think the reaction of the majority of Americans will get us a little closer to proclaiming a winner in the Crzy House Great Debate of 2003.

Because the reason for invading Iraq - and for the first time in our history admittedly waging a preemptive war was because we were (supposedly) eminently threatened by Saddam’s WMDs. Bushies from Dubya on down said it repeatedly. And while a “Lanceistic” argument can be made that most Americans bought into the idea of that war before we invaded because of a compliant US mass media, if that same media shows that Bush consciously deceived the American people when he gave the reasons he gave for going to war - then it seems to me that fundamentally changes everything. If a majority of the American people say they don’t care about that deception, then no one can assert that it goes to their lack of knowledge. At that point it goes to their lack of character IMO.
