(Sacramento, California) California governor Gray Davis wants to throw gay butts in the ashcan. Your cigarette butts that is.

In response to alarmingly high rates of smoking among lesbians and gays, Davis Thursday announced the first statewide anti-tobacco print campaign specifically aimed at the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities.

"Our campaign to dramatically reduce the smoking rate of Californians is a huge success," Gov. Davis said. "Now, it's time for us to address the same concerns in the gay and lesbian community. Studies show that 70 percent more gays and lesbians smoke compared to the general population."

According to the 2001 California Health Interview Survey conducted by the Center for Health Policy Research at the University of California, Los Angeles, gays and lesbians 18-65 years old had a combined smoking prevalence of 30.8 percent, which is 70 percent more than the state's general population in the same age group.

"There is also evidence that Big Tobacco marketing is targeting the gay and lesbian community," Gov. Davis added. "We must do our part in stopping this manipulation and let the gay and lesbian community know that smoking kills."

Among gay men, smoking prevalence was 33.2 percent, which is 56 percent more than all other California men. Among lesbians, 25.3 percent smoked, which is 68 percent more than all other California women.

"Despite historic lows in California's overall smoking rates and progressive tobacco control policies, the state's lesbian and gay communities smoke at distressingly high rates," said State Health Director Diana M. Bontá, R.N., Dr.P.H. "Targeted tobacco education and prevention services are crucial in our efforts to reduce smoking prevalence in all of California's communities."

The state's two new print ads will start running in the June issues of gay and lesbian publications to coincide with Gay Pride Month. The ad campaign will continue through June 2004.

"Protest" shows a man in a crowd carrying a protest sign that reads, "The gay community faces discrimination, but not from cancer, heart disease or emphysema." The ad states the fact that smoking is the No. 1 killer in gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender communities.

"Tobacco's impact on California's gay and lesbian communities must not be ignored," said Kirk Kleinschmidt, chair of the Tobacco Education and Research Oversight Committee. "We must rally against the tobacco industry with an aggressive campaign to underscore the industry's deceptive marketing to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender audiences and provide comprehensive prevention services to help those who want to quit smoking."

The second ad, "Vending Machine" features a photo of a cigarette vending machine typically seen in gay bars. The ad explains how buying cigarettes contributes to Big Tobacco profits that the industry uses to promote its products to the gay community.

"Unfortunately, the tobacco industry's marketing efforts appear particularly effective among lesbians and gays," Gloria Soliz, project director of the Coalition of Lavender Americans on Smoking & Health. "These new data are a wake-up call to our communities. It's time to spread the word and not let the tobacco industry infiltrate our lives."

Development and placement of these ads is paid for by Proposition 99, a 1988 voter-mandated 25 cents per pack tax on tobacco. Proposition 99 funds comprehensive programs to combat tobacco use in California using multiple channels to educate the public, including local health departments, community-based organizations, the media, schools, universities and numerous other organizations.

"Smoking is a deadly addiction. Anything we can do to break the habit will save precious lives," Gov. Davis said.
