Tristan hid his smile behind his wineglass when Jeremy and Marz burst out laughing. He honestly didn’t care one way or the other whether thieves were good or not. He’d like to see a thief come try and steal something from him, and then he’d see how good or not they really were! His expression sobered when Erlic spoke up in response to Marz’s question about the chakras. He rolled his eyes, ever so slightly. Obviously, Erlic had no idea how hard it was for Marz to settle down and concentrate on one thing for any length of time, incense or no incense.

It was hard to keep the grin off his face when Erlic gave him permission to accompany Marz. Of course, he had to maintain his usual solemn expression that proclaimed he didn’t give a damn about anything Erlic said, but inside he was almost bursting with suppressed excitement. He jumped up from his chair and accompanied Marz from the dining room, all sorts of ideas about what would happen with Marz’s magic buzzing through his head as they continued up the stairs and down the hallway.

He was, as usual, completely unaware of the hungry looks Marz occasionally tossed him. He was much too preoccupied with wondering just what exactly Erlic was going to do to Marz later on tonight. Apparently, he thought, as he absently lit the cigarette he’d been given, he needed his student to be in a meditation before he could proceed. Wasn’t that sort of thing dangerous, particularly with Marz? That was how Tristan had screwed up that shield a while back, anyway. Course, he also screwed up big time with Marz’s memory, causing him to have complete amnesia for several weeks.

Maybe I’m the one that’s dangerous for Marz! he thought with a slight smile as they finally reached their room. He nodded at Marz’s comment concerning the incense, then proceeded to take his place on the floor, sitting cross-legged in front of his friend, who so far didn’t look too comfortable on his pillow.

“Damn!” Marz suddenly cursed, making Tristan jump a little. “I can't remember those mantras because I haven't practiced them in so long.” He grinned at the frustrated look on his face, but otherwise kept his mouth shut. “I need something to focus on,” Marz continued, “in order to keep my mind from flying from one thing to another, Tris. Got any suggestions?”

Tristan cocked his head slightly, trying to remember his own early lessons on meditation. If he recalled correctly, he hadn’t been all that keen on them either.

”Just close your eyes and try to clear your mind, sabi,” his teacher said, and Tristan did as instructed, even though there were really a million other things he would rather be doing right now. A steady stream of swords, new boots, the gittern (a gift from his father), and other equally fascinating objects were marching past his closed lids.

“This is stupid,” he muttered, squirming in his seat, “I’m bored. Can’t we do something else?”

He barely heard his teacher’s sigh: “I could kill your father for talking me into this…”

Tristan snapped out of the brief memory and smiled ever so slightly, no longer put off by such things as much as he used to be. In truth, his lessons had been so long ago, that he couldn’t really remember the proper steps taken.

He shrugged. “I don’t know. What the hell’s a mantra, anyway?” he asked, giving Marz a somewhat baffled look. He thought for a second. “Well, never mind that. I’ll just make you relaxed, and then you can concentrate better or whatever.”

He jumped to his feet and hurried over to the fireplace, striking the two firestones together to light it since the windows were always kept open in their room, and it tended to get chilly. Plus, a good fire had a relaxing feel to it, too.

After taking a few more quick puffs, he laid the cigarette aside against the ashtray and sat down on the ground again, this time behind Marz, pausing to remove his own sword and boots as well.

“Okay,” he warned, “I’m not…um, as good at this as you are, but I’ll try.” He scooted forward and moved into a kneeling possession, before bringing his hands up and beginning to cautiously massage the muscles in Marz’s back. He thought that so long as he didn’t really screw it up and end up hurting him, a nice gentle touch would help him relax both his mind and his muscles, which Tristan remembered to be pretty important in meditation.

“Just let me know if I hurt you,” he joked, before sobering a little. “All right, now here’s the hard part: try and think of something…positive. Something you really like or liked.” He realized, suddenly, that such an exercise might be kind of hard for someone like Marz, who didn’t exactly have the best past, but surely there was something he could think about that would bring him into a peaceful mental state.

“And just focus on that,” he continued, “Then when you feel relaxed, you should be able to empty your mind of all trivial matters or whatever.”
