Subject: Breakfast
In reply to: Rowan and Tristan 's message, "Night, then morning again" on 15:30:38 12/25/01 Tue

Every time Marz muttered, just five more minutes, Tristan nudged him while repeatedly reminding him about the assassins that might come looking for Alakbar. Cursing softly, Marz finally sat up and rubbed the sleep from his eyes. His right wrist was tender but at least he could move it without feeling much pain. The same held true for his ribs, which felt like they had been bruised rather than broken.

Yawning, he reached for his water skin, splashing some of the liquid over his face and neck. Although he hated starting the day without a bath and fresh clothing, he knew there was no time for such things. "We better grab some breakfast before Erlic hustles us out of here," he said.

Marz tossed the animal skin blanket off then pulled on his boots and strapped on his weapons. He slid his arms through the straps of his pack, letting it rest across his back. Thankfully, he didn't look inside the bag because he would have bitched at Tristan for the disheveled state of their clean clothing. Marz had folded each garment neatly, only to have the dragon ruin his handiwork when he went rummaging through the bag the night before.

When the aroma of freshly brewed java reached his nose, Marz hurried out of the cave with Tristan close behind him. After muttering a good morning to the others that were awake and sitting around the campfire, Marz plopped down and filled two mugs with java. He handed one to Tristan then turned his attention to Ravin. The thief was staring at a large chunk of raw meat he had retrieved from the bag of rations provided by Queen Kazabet. Obviously, he wasn't sure what to do with the foodstuff, setting it down on the magical preservative paper and pulling out a loaf of bread from the pack instead.

Marz shook his head at the incompetence of some people. He grabbed one of the long handled pans the tribe used for cooking, and while Ravin passed around the bread, Marz sliced the raw meat into the pan and held it over the fire until is sizzled.

"That sure smells good," Tia said.

Jeremy nodded in agreement before rushing off to get some clay plates from the women of the tribe. Once the meat finished frying, Marz found eggs in the Queen's ration pack and proceeded to scramble them.

"My vision is a little better today," Tia whispered to Rowan. "But, it's still far from being perfect." She was grateful to the elf for staying near her throughout the night. "I hope my impaired vision doesn't make me too much of a burden."

Before Tia could say any more she was interrupted by Justin, who bumped into her as he sat down by the fire. The merc's clothing was clean for a change, and his hair and beard had been neatly brushed. "What the hell happened last night?" He bellowed out the question. "Somebody knocked me out and that's the last thing I remember until I woke up in a cave a few minutes ago."

Jeremy related the tale of the beast in the water while helping Marz load up the plates with food. Apparently attracted by the aroma, Alakbar hurried from his cave to the fire, snatching a plate out of the otherworldly youth's hands. He scarfed the food down in a matter of seconds while the others watched in amazement. Alakbar then held out his empty plate to Marz and rattled on in the Nerombian tongue.

Seeing the puzzled looks on the faces of his comrades made Ravin speak up. "I think he's starving." Of course, the thief had no idea what the youth had said, but he sensed his intense hunger. Ravin handed him a chuck of bread and Marz refilled his plate. Smiling contently, Alakbar sat back on his heels and proceeded to eat a little slower this time.

When he finished dishing out the food, Marz dug into his own meal. "We have a long walk ahead of us," he quipped, after remembering what the tribal leader told them. "That sea of salt is supposed to be three or four hours east of here if these people know what they're talking about that is."

"And, we'll need to stay alert," Ravin added, "in case someone comes looking for Alakbar." When the thief spotted Erlic coming out of a cave, he set his plate down and ran up to the man. "Can you give me a quick lesion on how to throw those damn shurikens without cutting a finger off in the process?" he asked with a smile.

Alakbar licked his plate clean than faced south and prostrated himself on the ground while reciting what sounded like prayers. Once he finished whatever he was doing, he sat back on his heels again and pointed at Tristan's sword. "Boka abdu wanka," he said, his blue eyes boring into the dragons.

"I think he wants a weapon," Marz said before spooning more eggs into his mouth.

"Well, he ain't gettin' one of mine!" Justin snarled. "We don't know if we can trust the scrawny punk yet. If we arm him, he might try to kill us when our backs are turned."

Alakbar glanced at the merc then pointed at Tristan's sword again. "Knife is being needed to be fighting slayers, coming they should be. Giving to me please, thanking you very much."

Marz grinned after swallowing a mouthful of java. "It seems that Alakbar knows how to speak a little of the common tongue."
