Subject: Why does WIP hate Fantasy Football?

I do play Fantasy Football and absolutely love it. Playing was directly responsible for my huge interest in the NFL. I got to know different players from around the league, not just players from the Eagles squad.

Obviously, since there is a "Fantasy" section on the NFL's own web site, and other major sites endorse or host it (CBS, ESPN, Fox Sports, Yahoo, etc.).

Why is it that every time callers bring up fantasy sports on WIP, they are berated? Be it Howard or Big Daddy or Glen or Steve Fredericks, fantasy enthusiasts are labeled as "losers."

Seems to me if WIP had a weekly Fantasy radio show, that would appease thousands of listeners, and maybe even attract some ratings.

It's definitely not the "gambling" aspect of Fantasy sports that makes WIP stay away, because Eskin does has a weekly call-in point spread discussion with a handicapper every Friday, and Vegas odds are mention quite frequently by all the hosts.

Former Eagles great Ron Jaworksi hosts an internet Fantasy Football radio show affiliated with NFL.com. Can it be that bad?

[> Before Jody Mac fled to WFAN, I would occasionally hear him say thay he'd like to talk fantasy football,, but of course, the management wouldn't let him. Bigby is the guy they'd have to convince that such a show would attract an audience, but obviously, he's not convinced yet, even though other media outlets are featuring it. One hour during a weekend slot wouldn't be too big of a risk, would it? -- the Formal Observer, 07:42:43 10/31/02 Thu

[> What in the world would you talk about for an entire hour devoted to fantasy football? it's about as interesting as watching nose hair grow, and obviously Mr. Bigby's programming genius is once again right on target. -- Madison (Now fantasy opera casting....THAT's entertainment.), 14:57:54 10/31/02 Thu

[> [> I'm sorry, but his alleged genius has eluded him here, since so many other major media outlets have picked up on it already. This is purely a guy thing. Besides, he puts Sonny Hill on every week doesn't he? And what purpose does that show serve except as an excuse to rationalize the bad behavior of Allen Iverson and others of his ilk and to reminisce about the same group of old players from the 50s? -- the Formal Observer, 23:44:31 10/31/02 Thu

[> I think everything WIP broadcasts is pure fantasy. Saying WIP is a sports talk station is similar to saying pro wrestling is a sport. -- The Semi-Formal Observer, 18:55:10 11/04/02 Mon
