Subject: Baseball--Rams take 2 of 3 from UMAS

Fordham took two of three from UMASS at St. John's field this weekend. Saturday was almost a washout, it was cold and wet, but surprisingly they got the scheduled doubleheader in. We got crushed in the first 13-1. UMASS had their top pitcher going, I think the guy's name was Torra. He only had 1 win to date, but had an ERA of 1.0. Rumor around the ballpark was that the guys in the stands directly behind home were a bunch of pro scouts from the Seattle organization looking at Torra. They left immediately after his game. This was the first time I really saw the freshman Cory Riordan get hit hard. He gave up a ton of hits. They handcuffed us with a 4 hitter, but we really killed ourselves with errors and hit batters. And, they kept using a very effective hit and run offense whenever they had a man on first. We came roaring back in the second and took an 8-1 decesion behind another talented frosh, T. Davis. The third game on Sunday was really enjoyable. Martinez was throwing strikeouts all day, he had ten I think. And, Goulian stole home with the score tied at 4. I had not seen that in years. The pitcher was so startled, he threw the pitch over the catcher's head. All three games were really entertaining....grand slams, multiple home runs, inning ending double plays with the bases loaded, stealing home, balks,....not too much we did not see. Rams still behind RI in the A10 but firmly in second place. GO RAMS!!!!
