Subject: I agreed with the call at first, disagreed later, but then yesterday they went through a brief explanation of the pivot foot and talk of how Ray's left foot actually landed before the shot which made me turn back to agreeing with the call. Tough, but correct call. As for this notion that you can simultaneously land and take off from both feet, I contest that such an act is impossible. In my book the hop step is always a travel.

  • A very good analysis, Dan, but an important thing to note is the officials' consistency in making those calls. As JoDete mentions, that hop step is always a travel, but is never called. Did Ray travel? Technically, yes, but if the officials haven't called it all game - hell, haven't called it all year! - the player has a reasonable expectation that it is legal. That's why I didn't think it should have been called. (NT) -- Ram'83, Mon March 28, 2005 10:10:58
  • My guess is that the referee blew the whistle thinking there was a foul (either a defensive foul on the floor before the shot or an offensive foul because Ray was lowering his shoulder and a charge was anticipated) and then decided that there was not enough contact to call a foul. That left him with having to call something because he couldn't say it was an inadvertant whistle so he called a travel...who knows? It was a travel but I think the best thing in this situation was to make absolultely no call whatsoever because I do not think anyone would have been complaining as to why a travel was not called...still, a gutsy call that would never have been made if that game was played at Villanova or in Philly, although the Syracuse crowd was still pretty pissed off...
