A very good analysis, Dan, but an important thing to note is the officials' consistency in making those calls. As JoDete mentions, that hop step is <I>always</I> a travel, but is never called. Did Ray travel? Technically, yes, but if the officials haven't called it all game - hell, haven't called it all year! - the player has a reasonable expectation that it is legal. My guess is that the referee blew the whistle thinking there was a foul (either a defensive foul on the floor before the shot or an offensive foul because Ray was lowering his shoulder and a charge was anticipated) and then decided that there was not enough contact to call a foul. That left him with having to call something because he couldn't say it was an inadvertant whistle so he called a travel...who knows? It was a travel but I think the best thing in this situation was to make absolultely no call whatsoever because I do not think anyone would have been complaining as to why a travel was not called...still, a gutsy call that would never have been made if that game was played at Villanova or in Philly, although the Syracuse crowd was still pretty pissed off... - Good analysis, Dan. I agree with '83 that consistency is key here. The call is rarely if ever made, so why make it at the most critical point in the game? I still maintain that 99-100 times that call is not made, particularly at that point in a game. Amazing that it was in this huge game.
