• They're not all coaches. They have a head coach, three assistants, a Director of Basketball Operations, and some of these big-time programs, like Kentucky, have other positions on the staff (not coaching, per se, but related to the team). • As per NCAA rules teams are allowed 1 head coach, 3 assistant coaches and 1 Director of Basketball Operations. The 3 assistants are allowed to go on the road and recruit, as is the head coach. As far as I know there are not any rules as far as Graduate Assistants are concerned though, so perhaps what you are seeing is a bench with several grad assistants on it. • Here's the point and it's really quite simple. You look at what teams/programs are doing that are more successful than you and you learn from it. I know the staff rules, but others seem to stretch them. Duke had 6 guys with coats, ties and clip boards sitting on the bench today. Somehow they all contribute - be it scouting reviews, creating video packages, assisting in practice, charting in-game tendencies, screening mail, answering the phone, whatever Coach K wants them to do.
